Last week's Derrimut fire was a tragedy that cannot be allowed to happen again. Our CEO spoke with Channel 7 News and the ABC about our concerns for locals, their houses, their workplace safety, their environment, and their health. We stand with all Western Suburbs communities in their calls for: 1. An end of the use and storage of dangerous chemicals in the Western Suburbs 2. A full and independent investigation into the fire to ensure that it never happens again on this or similar sites; and to prioritise the safety of residents and local workers for safe living, working and environmental conditions. 3. Clear and consistent communication to all local residents, in a range of languages, formats and forums, to ensure all local communities understand their rights and how to keep themselves and their families safe now and into the future 4. Immediate treatment of local waterways to make them safe for locals, families and pets. 5. Fair, decent and safe work for all, and better response powers for WorkSafe to investigate dangerous work sites If any locals have concerns about their workplace or housing rights, they can contact Westjustice for more information on (03) 9749 7720. The key aspects for emergency planning should be viewed as circular, not linear because it’s about continuous improvements. Emergency planning is more than maintaining compliance or preventing loss of life and property. It’s about strengthening communications with the larger community, for the mutual benefit of employees and the public. #safety #emergencyplanning #ehs Watch this on-demand webinar about best practices for safety and community engagement: https://lnkd.in/g7ViWWey

Founder and Chief Executive Officer AFHEG Foundation| SDG 3| Member; Catalyst 2030| Health Promotion | Global Health| Health Systems Strengthening
Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) are critical topics in community health because when appropriate WASH practices are implemented, they help prevent disease and increase general well-being. To achieve this, I believe that communities together with organizations in the WASH sector have to implement educational programs that highlight the importance of clean water, proper sanitation, and good hygiene practices to enable the populace to embrace the importance of proper WASH practices. This will not only improve health outcomes but also build a foundation for sustainable community development. #WASH #CommunityHealth #AFHEG
