It was awesome to catch up with athlete and nature-lover Ethan Shawcroft (right) this week and get started on filming for our new resource "Volunteering in Nature: Let's Make it Accessible"! With his farming background and Indigenous heritage, Ethan is a lifelong horticulturalist and revegetation master - in some years planting more than 10,000 trees on volunteer projects! He is also passionate about reconnecting people to nature and ensuring equal access to nature opportunities. Ethan says it is not an easy process for him to find either paid or volunteer work in the environment. Prospective employers see his chair and don't give him the chance to prove himself. Instead, he builds his own outlets, and helps others find their outlets too - including setting up a friend's horticultural business, which he now works in. The key barriers Ethan and our other lived-experience consultants come up against in the nature-volunteering world are people's attitudes and misconceptions around disability and a lack of understanding about how to create a more inclusive space for volunteering. We're working on addressing those obstacles, but in the meantime, we wanted to share this important point from Ethan: "You don't need to have a disability to talk to people with a disability. Having open and respectful conversations with empathy is key to figuring out how to work together." Want to get involved in this project?
