Today is International Transgender Day of Visibility 🏳️⚧ This day recognizes the struggles and achievements of the fight for gender equity by transgender and non-binary individuals. It is imperative that allies understand and join this fight to resist the oppression this community faces for simply being themselves. Rates of body dissatisfaction rated by transgender youth were reported at a staggering 93% in the Jan 2023 survey conducted by @trevorproject, and their Feb 2022 survey showed that 2SLGBTQIA+ youth who were diagnosed with an eating disorder reported nearly 4x the risk of attempting suicide in the past year vs. those who were not. It is critical to create safe spaces for trans and nonbinary youth to seek support. Care providers must raise their cultural competency in all aspects of trans identities – particularly in understanding the ways eating disorders present, and their underlying causes – to aid in early detection and intervention. This statistic is more than a number; it's a call to action.
