I was asked a good sales question today. My answer will help process this. “How do I go about hiring my first salesperson?” Let me share this… At Colorado University, for the Football Program, Deion Sanders ONLY wants to recruit young men that have 5 characteristics: -Smart -Tough -Fast -Disciplined -With Character He does not recruit anyone that doesn’t fit those characteristics. And the whole staff, and certainly recruiting staff (as they are doing a lot of the heavy lifting facing potential players) are sniffing out each one of those characteristics. So, my answer. You must know WHO your ideal salesperson is. No different than if you have an ideal customer. Or wife. Or husband. I know what and who I am looking for. In all those cases. Is it... Entrepreneurial? Great attitude? Coachability? You pick. Invest time to get clarity here. Sure, extra time and work if you don’t know. But, if you hire someone and you don’t know. All hell will break loose later. Let's GROW.

What are your thoughts on the perceived split between "hunters" and "farmers" in sales? For me a successful sales rep combines both roles by initially securing new accounts (hunting) and subsequently expanding and nurturing those relationships (farming). And, the qualities of a top sales reps I have witnessed are perseverance, grit, opportunism, humility, and trustworthiness? Do these attributes align more with the traditional image of a "hunter," or a "farmer" to you? Or do they challenge the conventional distinctions between sales roles?

“Why would anyone want to work in sales…” Before I fell into sales I thought it would be a piece of cake. Battenburg. How wrong I was. The emotional rollercoaster that can happen in one day - let alone one week - is unreal. Words can't describe how quickly you need to cultivate resilience and emotional intelligence!
