Learn about HIV transmission, prevention methods, and the importance of regular testing. 2⃣ Use protection: Always practice safe sex by using condoms consistently and correctly. Let's prioritize our sexual health and well-being. 3⃣ Get tested: Regular HIV testing is key to early detection and prevention. It's better to know your status and take action if needed. 4⃣ PrEP and PEP: If you are at high risk of contracting HIV, talk to your healthcare provider about pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). Established in 1995, National HIV Testing Day serves as a pivotal reminder for individuals to prioritize their health by undergoing HIV testing, gaining awareness of their HIV status, and promptly accessing necessary care and treatment. HIV testing, including self-testing, empowers individuals to take proactive measures to safeguard their well-being. Those who receive a negative test result can use various HIV prevention tools, including pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), condoms, and comprehensive sexual health services such as vaccinations and testing for sexually transmitted infections. Those who receive a positive test result may be instructed by their healthcare provider to start HIV treatment (antiretroviral therapy, or ART) for optimal health outcomes. The dynamic of an ageing population of people living with HIV is not unique to South Africa, as recently outlined in this article in the journal The Lancet Global Health, but the size of our HIV epidemic means the scale of the effect here is substantial. According to estimates from Thembisa, the leading mathematical model of HIV in South Africa, there are currently around 1.7 million people aged 50 and older who are living with HIV in the country. This number is projected to rise rapidly in the coming years as people living with HIV who are now in their forties get older. https://lnkd.in/eesw3Eyd #africa #healtj #healthcare #medicines #vaccines #publichealth #hiv

Effectiveness of Using Additional HIV Self-Test Kits as an Incentive to Increase HIV Testing Within Assisted Partner Services Study: Effectiveness of Additional HIV Self-Test Kits as an Incentive to Increase HIV Testing Key Findings: In a study conducted in Western Kenya, offering a second HIV self-test (HIVST) as an incentive within assisted partner services did not significantly impact HIV testing rates or first-time testing. However, those who opted for the second test reported that it incentivized them to test. Practical Implications: Despite no significant overall increase in testing rates, a substantial proportion of partners who received a second HIVST reported that it encouraged them to get tested. This insight can inform future strategies to promote HIV testing and improve access to testing services. Value: Understanding the impact of incentives on HIV testing behavior can help tailor interventions to better support and encourage individuals to undergo HIV testing, ultimately contributing to HIV prevention and care efforts. https://lnkd.in/g4ZWDqjj #ClinicalTrials #AIinHealthcare #MedicalAI #HealthTech #DigitalHealth #PatientCareAI #AIResearch #MedicalInnovation #BioTech #AIforGood #HealthcareData #AIinMedicine #PharmaAI #ClinicalData #HealthAI #AIHealthSolutions #PrecisionMedicine #AIandHealth #ClinicalAnalytics #AIDiagnostics

🧵 On National HIV/AIDS and Ageing Awareness Day 2024, we’re shining a light on the critical issue of late HIV diagnosis among older adults. 🌍 Across the globe, people aged 50+ are more likely to be diagnosed late with HIV than younger individuals. In fact, CDC data reveals that nearly a third of older adults receive a late diagnosis—missing out on opportunities for early intervention and treatment. 🛑 Late diagnosis leads to delayed treatment, which can weaken the immune system, increase the risk of serious diseases and contribute to further transmission. 🔬 A UK study from 2023 uncovered key barriers to HIV testing in this age group, including outdated knowledge, stigma and misconceptions around aging and HIV risk. So, what can we do? ✅ Tailor health promotion to older adults, emphasising treatment benefits and U=U (Undetectable = Untransmissible). ✅ Expand universal HIV screening (beyond traditional age limits) ✅ Use tech to prompt testing, like automatic reminders in health records. ✅ Normalise conversations about sexual health and substance use. ✅ Promote HIV self-testing. ✅ Discuss the pros and cons of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in people at high risk of HIV infection. It's time to break down these barriers and ensure older adults receive the care they deserve. #HIVAgingAwareness #EndHIVStigma #LateDiagnosis #HIVAging #NationalHIVAIDSAwarenessDay 👇 References in the comments below.

#Ukraine has the second largest population of people living with #HIV in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region. To strengthen HIV care, the country is prioritizing the delivery of a guaranteed package of services at the #primaryhealthcare level. The potential of these reforms to improve HIV service delivery is huge because they #PutPeopleFirst. People living with or at risk of HIV will be able to access high-quality prevention and treatment services that are closer to home and integrated with the other health services they already access. However, are #PHC facilities and providers—typically a person’s first point of contact with the health system—ready to offer person-centered HIV services? And if not, what do they need to get there? PATH traveled the country to find out. https://lnkd.in/gZT8MKAX

🌟 Understanding PrEP: A Game-Changer in HIV Prevention🌟 Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a revolutionary HIV prevention strategy for individuals who are at high risk of HIV infection. When taken consistently, PrEP can reduce the risk of HIV infection by up to 99%. Who should consider PrEP? - People with an HIV-positive partner - Individuals with multiple sexual partners - People who inject drugs - Anyone who engages in high-risk sexual behavior How does PrEP work? PrEP involves taking a daily pill that contains two HIV medicines: tenofovir and emtricitabine. These medications prevent the virus from establishing a permanent infection if you are exposed to HIV. Why is PrEP important? - Reduces anxiety and fear of contracting HIV - Empowers individuals to take control of their health - Contributes to the overall reduction of new HIV cases How to get started with PrEP: 1. Consult a healthcare provider to determine if PrEP is right for you. 2. Undergo initial HIV and other health screenings. 3. Commit to taking PrEP daily and follow-up regularly with your healthcare provider. Awareness and access to PrEP can save lives. Let's spread the word and support each other in staying safe and healthy. Share This to Help Inform Others About PrEP! #PrEP #HIVPrevention #PublicHealth #HealthEquity #SafeSex #EndHIV #LGBTQHealth #YouthHealth #AwarenessMatters #HealthcareAdvocate
