According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, companies globally signed a record 46 gigawatts of power purchase agreements (PPAs) in 2023, a 12% y-o-y increase. The PPA volume growth in Europe surged by 74% to reach 15.4 GW, a main driver of the overall increase. Major U.S. companies like Amazon and Meta pushed for more contracts in line with their goal of sourcing 100% renewable energy for their data centers. In the next ten years, demand for renewable energy from businesses is expected to surpass 100 GWs. Furthermore, the U.S. utilities installed 36 GW of solar energy and 14.3 GW of battery storage in 2023. The solar installations by the utilities almost doubled from the prior year. The U.S. is on track to add 63 GW of utility-scale solar capacity in 2024, with storage expected to make up over 80% of this total.
