A groundbreaking study published in JAMA Network Open shows that noninvasive at-home colorectal cancer screening could reduce the risk of death by 33%. Researchers from The Ohio State University and Kaiser Permanente found that the annual use of the fecal immunochemical test (FIT) is as effective as a ten-year colonoscopy for people at average risk. This study, involving 11,000 patients, emphasizes the importance of making cancer screening more accessible, especially for underserved communities where screening rates are low. The findings are particularly significant in addressing racial disparities in healthcare. Black patients are 20% more likely to be diagnosed with colon cancer and 40% more likely to die from it than non-Hispanic White patients. Expanding access to at-home tests like FIT could be a game-changer in closing these gaps, ensuring more lives are saved through early detection. At WellPact, we believe in empowering individuals to take charge of their health, and this study reinforces the importance of accessible, noninvasive screening options. We're proud to support innovative healthcare companies who are leading the charge in making these life-saving tests available to everyone. By partnering with companies that are pushing the boundaries of what's possible in at-home testing, we're helping to ensure that more people have access to the tools they need to stay healthy and catch potential issues early. Together, we're making a real impact on health equity and patient empowerment. Check out the full article from The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center here: https://lnkd.in/eu63rrgG

Building digital products to increase the quality and efficiency of healthcare | Former VP/Head Digital Health Oncology R&D at AstraZeneca; Chief Scientific Officer, Evinova, AZ
Exciting news! The first patients have been enrolled in LOOP! Pneumonitis/Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), a serious and often difficult to detect side effect of multiple cancer treatments, can be devastating for certain patients while jeopardizing treatment outcomes for others. But today, we're taking a big step forward in advancing a digital solution to help patients and providers mitigate this risk. Our groundbreaking "LOOP" study has enrolled its first patients. This is a standard of care study to inform our understanding of the prodromal clinical manifestations of ILD and related patient and clinician behaviors in the clinical care setting. Link: https://lnkd.in/g6PKbpa3 Evidence like this may demonstrate clinical benefit and utility for an AI-powered patient and care provider digital solution to identify patients at a higher risk of ILD. It will also collect and track early signs of this low prevalence high morbidity side effect of over 44 oncology treatments. Such technology will provide data-driven and real-time quantification of individual risks during the course of treatment, enabling clinicians to deliver personalized toxicity monitoring and achieve better treatment outcomes. Our team is relentlessly focused on following the science, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to collect potentially practice-changing, prospective, empirical evidence to inform the natural history and early detection ILD pneumonitis, and to ideally optimize its management. We are incredibly grateful to the LOOP patient participants and recognise their commitment. Let's continue this journey of making a positive impact on patients' lives and redefine cancer care. #DigitalTherapeutics #ClinicalInnovation #HealthcareTransformation #LungCancer Melissa MarvelElisabeth Piault-LouisJoseph HughesSolomon DhanduEmmette HutchisonDorian ZoumplisNiko AndreEthan Basch

A Year of Journal Articles (343/365): Lyleroehr, M.J., Webster, K.A., Perry, L.M. et al. A mixed methods evaluation of patient perspectives on the implementation of an electronic health record-integrated patient-reported symptom and needs monitoring program in cancer care. J Patient Rep Outcomes 8, 66 (2024). https://lnkd.in/eTHAq5-J Summary: The study investigated the implementation of an electronic health record-integrated patient-reported symptom and needs monitoring program (cPRO) in a healthcare system's cancer care routine. The researchers used a mixed methods approach to gather feedback from patients about their experiences with cPRO. Patient perspectives on cPRO: Positive aspects: Patients found cPRO valuable for treatment monitoring, communication with care team, self-reflection on symptoms, and improved visit efficiency. They reported cPRO to be easy to use and navigate. Negative aspects: Patients were confused about the purpose of cPRO and how responses are used. They desired more education and communication from the care team about cPRO. Additionally, some patients found cPRO repetitive and felt a lack of acknowledgement from their doctors regarding their cPRO responses. Based on the findings, the researchers made the following improvements to cPRO implementation: Shortened the cPRO assessment to reduce completion time. Clarified response instructions within the assessment. Added a mechanism to inform patients if their clinicians reviewed their cPRO results. Overall, the study highlights the importance of patient education and communication for successful implementation of patient-reported outcome programs like cPRO.

+++ Cancer treatment and the time spent traveling for care are often very time-consuming and disrupt both work and home life for patients and their caregivers. I recently spoke with @/Patricia Weiser at @/Managed Healthcare Executive about some ways time toxicity can be reduced, including oral targeted therapies to reduce the number of times patients need to go to clinics, hypofractionation in radiation therapy (higher doses for fewer days), same-day scheduling of tests and treatments, and virtual toxicity checks to eliminate unnecessary in-person appointments and home chemotherapy infusions. By recognizing and working to decrease time toxicity for patients with cancer, we can lessen their burden in an already high-stress situation. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dP7D8WQk #health #cancer

Delighted to share my thoughts from my literature review on colorectal cancer (CRC) screening! Colorectal Cancer Screening: Practice and Factors Associated - A Literature Review Abstract: Colorectal Cancer (CRC) is a significant public health issue requiring urgent attention due to its varying incidence and mortality rates across different geographic regions. This literature review explores current CRC screening guidelines and the factors influencing screening uptake. Key Points: - CRC Screening Guidelines: Various methods are available internationally and nationally - Influencing Factors: Access to healthcare, physician recommendations, trust in providers, availability and cost of screening, transportation, embarrassment, family and friend support, fear of test results, and knowledge about the disease and screening tests. - Impact: These factors can either enhance or hinder the practice of CRC screening. - Importance: Identifying these factors is crucial to overcoming obstacles, ensuring early detection, and improving prevention and treatment outcomes for CRC. Recognizing and addressing the barriers to CRC screening is a vital step in improving public health and ensuring early treatment for colorectal cancer patients. The FDA's expert panel has just given a thumbs up to a groundbreaking colon cancer blood test by Guardant Health. Here's why this matters: 🔹 Highlights from the Panel: - The new blood test offers a simpler alternative to colonoscopies and fecal tests. - While less accurate than traditional methods, it provides an easier option for those who currently avoid screening. - The test detects 83% of colorectal cancers but only 13% of precancerous polyps. 🔹 Why It's Important: - About 150,000 Americans are diagnosed with colon and rectal cancers each year. - The test could boost screening rates among the one-third of people who are currently unscreened. - Early detection significantly increases survival rates, with a 91% five-year survival rate for early-stage colorectal cancer. 🔹 FDA's Consideration: - Although less precise at finding precancerous growths, increasing overall screening rates could prevent more cancers. - The test is especially aimed at those with average risk and seeks to reduce the barriers to screening. 👀 Looking Ahead: - The FDA typically follows such panel recommendations, hinting at likely approval. - This could change how millions approach cancer screening, potentially saving lives by catching cancer earlier. 🔎 Stay Informed: Embrace new technologies but remember the best screening method varies by individual. Consult your healthcare provider for advice tailored to you. 🌟 Let's push for more accessible and easier screenings! 🌟 Read More here: https://lnkd.in/g4aEX9x3 #ColonCancerAwareness #CancerPrevention #FDAApproval #HealthInnovation #GuardantHealth #CancerScreening #Healthcare #MedicalNews #SaveLives #EarlyDetection
