Join IVL Svenska Miljöinstitutet on 9 February 08:30-10:00 for an international webinar on accelerating design for recycling. As part of a project financed by Vinnova, the Swedish Environmental Institute IVL is organizing a webinar to discuss how to promote design for recycling on an international level. What is design for recycling? Design for recycling is a concept that involves designing plastic products in a way that makes them easier and more efficient to recycle. This can involve using fewer different types of plastic, using easily separable materials, and making products that are easy to sort and process. Why is design for recycling important? Currently, only a small percentage of plastic waste is recycled. This is partly due to the fact that many plastic products are not designed for recycling. Design for recycling can help to improve the recyclability of plastic products and reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills or the environment. What will be discussed at the webinar? - The implications of the Global plastic treaty for design for recycling - How the industry is currently implementing design for recycling - The challenges and opportunities for design for recycling at an international level - How to join forces to accelerate the adoption of design for recycling Who should attend? - Designers and manufacturers of plastic products - Recyclers - Policymakers - Anyone interested in promoting a circular economy for plastics The webinar is free of charge! #Packaging, on the regulation under discussion in Europe Renato Zelcher, CEO of CROCCO and past president of European Plastics Converters | EuPC, intervenes from the pages of Il Giornale di Vicenza. ‘There is too much ideology,’ said Zelcher. ‘We share the objectives of reducing packaging waste, but not the ideological approach that has characterised this regulation since the initial Commission text. There has been one step forward in the Europarliament and two backwards in the Council. There are some sectors, such as plastics, that are more affected, but let's remember that all companies, in some way, are affected by the regulation, because they all package to deliver goods. What worries me is that so many small or very small companies do not know what significant difficulties they may soon face. The Italian government and the Members of the European Parliament have moved in the right direction,’ adds Zelcher, ‘but it is difficult to undermine a regulation born from a footprint that I judge to be ideological: until yesterday Italian industry was envied around the world for its ability to recycle waste, even from packaging, and today they are telling us that it is better to reuse it, putting an entire supply chain at risk. Today, Italy is the second country after Germany for plastics processing and the first in Europe for packaging waste recycling. We are an example. What I find illogical is to want to impose not only environmental targets - and here we agree - but also the method to achieve them. The principle of technological neutrality is ignored here. There are no studies proving that reuse is necessarily more sustainable than recycling: today, with 200 grams of film, I pack a one-tonne pallet; but if we eliminate plastic, with paper or other materials we will weigh five times as much, and this leads to greater energy consumption and more pollution than recyclable plastic". We will see what the compromise will be,’ Zelcher concludes, ‘provided that a solution is reached: we hope that the 'green' weight of the regulation will be smoothed out in favour of the sustainability of the companies and the 100,000 jobs connected with it. Already today there is great uncertainty and this is blocking the investments of many companies, with economic damage already present'. #crocco

A new collaboration between Finland-based Neste, Austria’s Borealis and Covestro has been created in order to focus on chemically recycling tyres, so that they can go on to be used to produce polycarbonate. Through doing this, these three companies are completing the closed loop system for the automotive industry and are also making use out of tyres once they have reached the end of their lives. So far, the project has been successful in manufacturing headlamps, radiator grilles and other car parts out of old tyres. The article below showcases an innovative method these companies have created, for reducing plastic waste and reusing old tyres. This technique creates a circular system and promotes the drive towards a plastic waste free world. The world is producing 400 million tons of virgin plastic a year. At Mix-Up_H2020 , an international research project on microbial recycling of mixed plastics, 🌍 we're tackling this issue head-on. After our in person meetup last week. The project, which included 15 European and 4 Chinese partners, has just been concluded successfully. More than 140 publications were distributed within the project and all partners are pushing forward to include different plastics in the process. 🎉 The project, coordinated by Prof. Lars M. Blank from RWTH Aachen University , aimed to research ways to decompose mixed plastics into its building blocks using microorganisms. This approach sought to not only downcycle the material but also generate new high-quality plastics, thereby fostering a circular plastic economy. We at Everwave are proud to have been part of Mix-Up. Our responsibilities included supplying material collected during our Missions and managing the external communication of the research project. We believe in the critical importance of not only collecting legacy waste already present in the environment but also striving for a circular economy to reduce the production of new plastic. ♻️ Let's work together to make a lasting impact. Join us in driving the transition to a circular economy and reducing the impact of plastic waste! 🌱💪 “from plastic waste to plastic value” #MixUp #Research #CircularEconomy #Plastic
