Milestone Alert: Celebrating 20 Years at EY!
I reached a significant milestone on June 1st, marking 20 years at EY, doing the work I love. My husband and kids surprised me with balloons and cake to celebrate this special day, and my team did the same.
When people hear about my long tenure at EY, they often ask, “Aren’t you bored? 20 years at the same company? Haven’t you reached your career peak?” My answer is always the same: EY is home. It’s a place where I’ve thrived and contributed to our collective success, alongside many colleagues who have also dedicated 20 years or more. Together, we've strengthened the impact and legacy of this remarkable corporation.
When I began working as a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion ((DEI) practitioner 12 years ago, it wasn't a hot topic in emerging markets. Many sceptics in India dismissed it as a U.S. centric issue. However, through collaboration with my dedicated team and colleagues across EY, we have demonstrated significant impact across all aspects of diversity with measurable outcomes, debunking the myths held by non-believers.
DEI work is more crucial today than ever. Our clients, employees, and business leaders all recognize that those who have prioritized DEI from the beginning will undoubtedly reap the rewards of their investment.
Here are my top three tips for building a long and successful career, no matter when you begin:
1) If you're not passionate about your work, your team, or your organization, find something that truly moves you. Believe in what you do. Finding the right organization that aligns with your values and priorities is crucial—much like choosing the right partner or significant other. This alignment is key to a fulfilling and successful career.
2) Climbing the corporate ladder requires dedication and hard work—there are no shortcuts. You need to roll up your sleeves, get your hands dirty, and stay laser-focused on your goals. Continuously prove your competence through consistent performance and results.
Equally crucial is having sponsors who advocate for you within the organization. These sponsors are indispensable for your career advancement. If you have only one sponsor, it’s not enough. You need multiple champions who can provide opportunities, guidance, and visibility across different areas of the company.
By fostering a network of sponsors, you position yourself for greater opportunities and support as you advance in your career.
3) If you can influence change within your organization to create a more equitable workplace, act now. Promoting equitable opportunities across all dimensions of diversity will enhance the overall well-being of your colleagues and establish a legacy of your leadership.
No, I have not yet reached the peak of my career. As Robert Frost said, "I have miles to go before I sleep." Over the next 10 years, my goal is to significantly shorten the time needed to close the gender gap. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey.
