Lonnie Dupre, renowned for his Arctic expeditions and his pioneering achievements in extreme mountaineering, mirrors these qualities in his determination to explore and understand Earth's most remote and hostile environments. Lonnie Dupre is celebrated for being the first person to solo climb Denali in January, braving temperatures that plummeted to minus 75 degrees Fahrenheit (-59°C). His Arctic expeditions include solo summits of Mount McKinley (Denali) and expeditions to both the North and South Poles. His accomplishments not only demonstrate extraordinary physical and mental endurance but also highlight his deep commitment to environmental stewardship and raising awareness about climate change's impact on our planet's most fragile ecosystems. Day 3 of 15 #WhyExpeditionCruising The #Arctic and the #Antarctic are popular destinations for #expedition #cruising Arctic means the“land of bears” (derived from astronomy or the Greek word), whereas Antarctica is the opposite (and has no bears). The Arctic and Antarctica are both polar regions with distinct characteristics, with some common aspects. Location and Geography: The Arctic is situated in the Northern Hemisphere, encompassing the Arctic Ocean surrounded by landmasses like Greenland, Canada, Russia, and Scandinavia. Conversely, Antarctica lies in the Southern Hemisphere as a continent surrounded by the Southern Ocean. The Arctic is characterized by an ice-covered ocean interspersed with islands and coastal regions, while Antarctica is a massive ice-covered landmass with towering ice shelves and mountain ranges. Ecosystems: Both regions exhibit polar desert environments with minimal vegetation. The Arctic supports a slightly more diverse flora, including mosses, lichens, and shrubs due to its larger land area, while Antarctica’s vegetation is limited to mosses and algae along its coastal areas. Wildlife: The Arctic is home to iconic species like polar bears, seals, walruses, Arctic foxes, and various migratory birds. In contrast, Antarctica boasts penguins, seals, seabirds, and krill, forming the base of the marine food chain. Average Temperatures: Despite their frigid climates, there’s a significant difference in average temperatures. The Arctic experiences milder temperatures due to its proximity to inhabited landmasses, with averages from -10°C to 0°C . In contrast, Antarctica, being more isolated and elevated, endures much colder temperatures, averaging -10°C to -30°C annually. Countries and Ownership: The Arctic is governed by the Arctic Council, comprising 8 member countries with Arctic territories. Antarctica, however, is governed by the Antarctic Treaty System, with no single country owning it. Instead, it is designated as a scientific preserve, collectively managed by signatory nations. Every time we get back from the Arctic Expedition we say that it was one of our best yet, but this really was; these students really pushed themselves this season in the -27 degrees nights out in the snow. One of our prize winners stayed out for 5 nights in total and nearly every single student stayed out for 3-4. They really made the most out of their experience. A number of things made this trip different. A new questionnaire for the students to answer before they go to help create their personal tasks. A more detailed and illustrated quinsy build lesson plan was created that made it easier to follow and adhere to the safety instructions. I think with the extra clarity for all, the objective was very clear and the construction results were better. One of the biggest changes for me was the new Young Leaders Program that we have developed and executed for the first time. It was a resounding success from both the Polaris and the student point of view. The young leaders learned how to communicate as a teacher, how to manage people with respect and how to develop listening skills and implement learning strategies amongst their peers. One of the more special moments was a night hike out to a wilderness shelter where the students built a fire; we all had hot chocolate and snacks and shared stories of our adventures around the globe before we settled down for the night in the wilderness. Its great to see the students inner strength and confidence soar as they get good at difficult things. It really sets them apart from “the average”. It’s a great feeling sending them home knowing that they are better, stronger and a little more able to face life’s challenges. Antarctic Learnings #4 – Trust Yourself If you’ve done the right preparation and enough training it will be second nature to trust your judgement, to listen to your own decision making and to be decisive with it. As I’ve discussed before, I deliberately spent the previous two winters refining my techniques and increasing my understanding of the cold weather expedition environment so that when it came to it, I could make the correct informed decision. Taking the time to focus on this gave me confidence in my capabilities at the start of the expedition, which allowed me to relax into the journey rather than be phased by the magnitude. Too often am I seeing people essentially ‘fast-tracking’ their way to large solo expeditions by doing the minimum requirements to meet the criteria. While everyone can run their own race, this method is problematic. Firstly, these projects take time and effort to train for as well as allowing the individual to comprehend and understand the environment they are training for. Secondly, without being fully prepared the individual is less likely to enjoy their trip due to indecisiveness or a lack of confidence that is often symptomatic with a lack of experience. Especially on solo trips you have no one else to provide checks and balances or be that voice of reason if you’re about to enter the realm of stupidity. I thoroughly enjoyed my time away and this is partly borne through the confidence gained in training and preparation. Only a few times in Antarctica did I second-guess myself, usually at the end of a long day. It would only take a short moment of clarity to come to the right decision meaning I was safe and ultimately contented. The fish may scatter in panic, and the once serene reef becomes a place of tension and conflict. This underwater world mirrors our own professional environments. In the office, we’re like these sea creatures, each with our own roles and responsibilities, coexisting in a delicate balance. External pressures - tight deadlines, market shifts, or management changes - can disrupt our harmony and create conflict. But, if we remember that these challenges are often external and not of our making, we can strive to maintain our equilibrium, adapt, and continue to thrive together. #harmonyindiversity #resilienceinadversity
