Members of EGNATON e.V. and followers of the EGNATON e.V. #Forum In medicine, incubators provide an environment for premature babies, ensuring an optimal climate where newborns can grow in peace. In a figurative sense, "incubators" also fulfil this function for company founders. Incubators are facilities that help companies set up businesses and support them in the process. European universities are increasingly making such facilities available. Today's example of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven not only shows how complex the planning of a laboratory building is, demonstrating this challenging task, especially in cases involving overarching particular tasks, but it is also an exciting process. Paul Lodewijckx and Kirsten Cornelissen will discuss this future-oriented topic at our EGNATON Forum in June 2024, 4-5 pm CEST. Went to a very interesting event last night at a super trendy "house-office" in San Francisco with a killer view (Fifty Years Venture Capital - thanks to the team for hosting!) The night's theme centered on Decentralized Science (#DeSci). The aim of DeSci is to establish a system that funds and rewards scientists globally, irrespective of their institutional affiliations. DeSci is working on a system where good ideas can thrive by decentralizing access to funding, scientific resources, and communication channels[1]. Democratizing science is not a new concept. So how is DeSci actually pulling this off? It helps to zoom into a couple of companies in this space to get an idea: Molecule AG and BioCrowd.IO Despite some differences, the overarching concept remains consistent: Molecule and BioCrowd are establishing a way for funders (professional and retail) to fund researchers. They streamline the process by assisting with contracts, sponsored research agreements, and patent licenses. Ultimate goal is to expedite translational research (bridging "the valley of death") by offering researchers easier access to capital and simplifying the investment process for funders. In 2016 the Stämm saga began! Fast forward to 2018, we’re a squad of 7 Stämmers. IndieBio, the powerhouse of biotech accelerators, hits us up – Yuyo Llamazares Vegh and Federico D'Alvia Vegh get the call. By 2019, we're 17 strong, cutting the ribbon on our very own lab in Buenos Aires. Looking back to those times we could never forsee the place we are at now. In 2020, with 25 Stämmers on board, we realized we were short in space, it was time to expand. Lab, offices, and workshops, we created the ideal space for our stämmers to put their disruptive ideas to the test. We entered 2021 with 70 Stämmers – that's almost triple! Hard-working people attract like-minded teammates. Research and development blooms under interdisciplinary teams. In 2022 we've hit 170 Stämmers! Multiplying faster than we can count, a solid teamwork framework helped us grow without losing our focus. And now, in 2023, we're wrapping it up with 216 unique Stämmers, each of them bringing singular talents to the table. Challenge prizes have emerged as powerful catalysts for uncovering groundbreaking approaches to tackling pressing public needs. With a boom in challenge prizes in recent decades, a strong evidence base is needed to inform their ongoing design. A StateUp team led by Eszter Czibor, with Stephanie Diepeveen Saurabh Lall, worked with leading challenge prize designer Challenge Works Nesta to map barriers to scaling innovation and key opportunities for supporting scaling through challenge prizes, providing the basis for developing the next generation of prizes. Registration is now open for the FREE Disruptive Technologies & Innovation SETU Industry Day, taking place Thursday February 1st in the South East Technological University (SETU) Arena, West Campus, Carriganore, Co. Waterford. This dynamic event will see all four SETU Gateways (ICS Technology Gateway at Walton Institute, PMBRC, SEAM, Design +) attend, as well as South East Clusters, clients, advisors, funders and important collaborators to identify and discuss the exciting Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF), a €500 million fund established in 2018 under Project Ireland 2040. The purpose of the Fund is to drive collaboration between Ireland’s world-class research base and industry as well as facilitate enterprises to compete directly for funding in support of the development and adoption of these technologies and seeding a new wave of start-ups. The aim is to support investment in the development and deployment of disruptive technologies and applications on a commercial basis, targeted at tackling national and global challenges. #Biology #FoundationModels is the BIG thing right now in #Pharma & #LifeSciences. When #ChatGPT (#GPT3 ...) was launched, there was a lot of talk whether one model would dominate the market ... I think now it's pretty clear, with the 100s of models (incl. many open source), that specific language models for specific applications, or even collection of language models orchestrated together is the way forward. We don't need a language model to be able to do "everything" ... for 99,999% of #DrugRnD use-case, i don't need a model that can code ... however a multimodal model that can understand biological text and images ... that makes sense. Also, a smaller model, less computer intensive is definitely more appealing than some of the largest LLMs on the market. I'm glad to see the community pushing for more specialized tools ... it's good for all of us!
