'Tis the season for giving, and there's no better place for it than the Comet Cupboard at UT Dallas! Nationwide, 23% of undergraduates and 12% of graduate students struggle with food insecurity in college, and Texas stats trend even higher. If a student is hungry, they have a 42% lower chance of earning their degree.
With the help of a tireless community of supporters, volunteers, and staff, the Comet Cupboard at UT Dallas is expanding its reach to address the needs of our students and help them achieve success in school. Thank you!

Community advisory councils are often required (by funders or government regulators), or added on when projects don't achieve expected outcomes. Having a highly effective community engagement model is rare and difficult to accomplish. Here's one example of several stakeholders coming together to make it happen.
I'm excited to share the impactful work of The MetroHealth System School Health Program's Youth Advisory Committees (YAC) with students from Cleveland Heights High School, Garrett Morgan High School, and Lincoln-West High School of Global Studies. This past school year, these students have come together to address food insecurity within their communities through innovative projects.
I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with the YAC at Cleveland Heights High School. Since the beginning of the YAC last fall, our students have shown their dedication and passion. They hosted a fresh produce school market in partnership with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, distributing 4,000 pounds of food to 282 people from 71 households in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights community on May 24th. I'm so proud of our students for their hard work in bridging the gap in food access within their community. We will be hosting our school market once a month until September, thanks to our students being willing to to share their time in the summer giving back to their community.
I also want to recognize Garrett Morgan High School students for organizing an amazing resource fair for their community. Lincoln-West High School students for their collaboration with a local garden, where we planted 7 apple trees.
Let's continue to support our youth as they lead the way in creating positive change in our communities.
Hey Kansas City,
You know, every time I think about what we're doing at Kansas City GIFT, I can't help but smile. And today, I've got a big reason to. Thanks to your unwavering support, @Vine Street Brewing Co. has just leveled up in a major way.
Imagine this: our community, thriving, buzzing with the energy of success. That's the vision we're turning into reality, one grant at a time.
But let's get real for a second. This moment? It's bigger than beer. It's about our hustle, resilience, and unbreakable Kansas City spirit. It's about taking the seeds of what if and nurturing them into the fruits of what is. With a new fermenter in their arsenal, Vine Street is pumping out orders and boosting their bottom line faster than ever. This isn't just a win; it's a transformation.
Massive props to Vine Street Brewing Co. for brewing up excellence and crafting a legacy that'll inspire generations. And to my Kansas City GIFT family—this victory is as much yours as theirs. Your generosity is the backbone of dreams like this. It's the spark that lights up the future.
But why stop here? Our mission—to close the racial wealth gap, to uplift and empower Black-owned businesses, to transform economically disadvantaged areas into beacons of opportunity—this mission is far from complete. It's about more than financial support; it's about building a movement. A movement where every success story, like Vine Street's, paves the way for countless more.
This journey has so much more, and your role is vital. Your support, your belief, it's what makes all this possible. Ready to dive deeper? Visit us at www.kansascitygift.org and become a donor today.
Here's to the wins we've shared, the stories we've told, and the countless glasses we've yet to raise.
Because when we lift one another, we all rise. Let's keep brewing success, one dream, one grant, one community at a time.

Not only does Feed the Children help children around the world, but they are headquartered right here in OKC making an impact locally, nationally, and globally.
I loved getting to attend the grand opening of the FEED's Partner Market! This new program is based out of our distribution center in Oklahoma City where local partner organizations can shop for the products they need - whether that be food, cleaning items, hygiene, and even books.
Did you know that 15% of people live below the poverty line right here in Oklahoma City? With the Partner Market, FEED is working to create measurable, sustained impact, and create a world where no child goes to bed hungry.

Feed the Children is proud to announce the grand opening of our OKC Partner Market this past week! This pilot program will allow our local partner organizations to self-select the resources they need for their own communities from our distribution center.
“Our local community partners don’t have the ability to store pallets of food, but they need a variety that’s right for their community. So we’ve opened our Partner Market, giving them the ability to select foods and essential items that SNAP benefits don’t cover: things like detergent and shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrushes," said Julie Laird Davis, Sr. Vice President of Strategic Partnerships & Individual Giving.
Thank you to our partners Oklahoma City Indian Clinic, Sisu Youth Services, the OK City Center, Light and Salvation Church, and Pivot for attending the launch!
The British philosopher John Gray wrote,
“We are who we are because of the places in which we grow up, the accents and friends we acquire by chance, the burdens we have not chosen but somehow learn to cope with. Real communities are always local-places in which people have put down roots and are willing to put up with the burdens of living together..."
Places, roots, accents, friends, loyalties, caring, burdens & responsibilities. An authentic & organic community is held together by a set of first principles or virtues and values just like a built structure is supported by a firm foundation, by brick and mortar, stone & concrete, by sets of columns & beams etc. In the case of the physical structure, remove the supports and the structure will come tumbling down, collapsing under its own weight into a pile of rubble. The same is true of organic communities which are also like structures, built with effort, care, love and compassion over long spans of time, held in place by the firm supports of human values and the glue of human relationships. Without love, caring and compassion, without commitment, without the willingness to shoulder duties & responsibilities, local communities cannot survive, cannot thrive. Keep up the good work.

Creating community takes willingness, compassion and caring enough to step up where help is needed and when it is needed.
Early morning at Abbey Lane Public School in #Oakville representating Halton Food for Thought to get to know their sit in breakfast program that is run 💯 with the support of community volunteers and financial support from Halton Food for Thought.
What a joy to see over 70 children out of under 300 kids at the school come in and have breakfast and see smiling faces. Every day the breakfast program makes sure that all kids who come hungry to school have nourishing food to feed them and kick start their day not being “hangry”! It was watermelon, grilled cheese, yogurt and milk today on the menu👍🏽

New government figures out last week show how being a young carer has a devastating impact on their education and prospects.
'Young carers have a persistent absence rate of 39% - almost twice as high as their peers. On average they miss 23 days of school per year, far more than those without a caring role. This lays bare the glaring inequality in the life opportunities for young carers compared to their classmates.'
Be Free Young Carers are looking to level the playing field by supporting Oxfordshires young carers, whether it's by providing that important respite from their role or supporting them with work experience placements, interview techniques and even 121 emotional support and counselling - we are here for them every step of the way.

#NASW SPS Webinar: January 29, 1-2 pm ET - Addressing Food Insecurity: A Community Approach; CEs: 1 Social Work Contact Hour.
As the liaison between the home, school, and community, two school social workers were able to leverage community partnerships to increase access to food resources for families within a large suburban school district. All food-security initiatives were located in different areas within the school district to accommodate the diverse needs of different areas. This webinar will discuss food insecurity initiatives that were piloted before the pandemic, during the pandemic, and post-pandemic and the community resources that aided in these efforts. The benefits of food insecurity initiatives community will be discussed in addition to best practices that maintain community partnerships and monitor community needs.

This summer, kids 18 and under can eat for free at 14 library locations. Starting June 18, lunch will be served Tuesdays through Fridays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. (except on Juneteenth and Independence Day)
Last year, the library served 11,421 lunches to kids throughout Sacramento County. During the summer, 88% of kids who get meals at school don’t have access over summer break. Lunch at the Library supports food equity in our community with meal sites within our neighborhoods.
