It's not uncommon for trans folks to be hired into entry-level healthcare roles, such as community outreach, then not have opportunities to further advance their careers. Sometimes this is due to inflexible degree requirements that prevent qualified nontraditional candidates from being considered. Sometimes this is due to not having clear next-step roles or appropriate professional development opportunities in place. Sometimes this is due to implicit or explicit bias. Health equity means creating the infrastructure for viable professional development and paths to leadership for the trans community. #transhealth #tgnchealth #lgbthealth #lgbtqhealth #healthequity #patientnavigation #communityhealth

Racial diversity in healthcare matters! Many organizations have moved on from this discussion and how it matters in healthcare. Why? The discussions are uncomfortable. Why? Generally speaking, many non Hispanic white individuals are not prepared to accept accountability for the past and present ZeroSum game point of views. Why? Because the historical and systemic context of racism is so horrifying that it’s believed to be humanly impossible to have occurred, and todays indiscretions are due to self-inflicted behaviors. Heath systems who intentionally hire clinicians and administrators that mirror the image of the communities served are more accountable for providing safe and equitable patient care, and retention of satisfed clinicians, and patients. This is a common sense strategy; however, demonstrating inclusive behaviors with use of inclusive language are the keys to achieving overall success.

PR Newswire: The 2024 Medscape Physician Compensation Report found 61% of doctors believe their profession is generally underpaid in the United States and 51% feel personally underpaid relative to their job duties.... As in previous years, this year's report found gender disparity in physician compensation with male physicians earning approximately 29% more than their female counterparts, underscoring ongoing concerns regarding pay equity within the medical profession. Over the previous year, the gender gap declined slightly for primary care physicians, but widened slightly for specialists. Additionally, the report reveals notable trends in racial and ethnic compensation disparities. Compensation for African American and Black physicians grew more than twice as fast as for any other racial or ethnic group. However, they are still the lowest compensated group, earning $37,000 on average less than white doctors. https://lnkd.in/d6jvtHvS #physiciancompensation #physicianjobs #healthcareindustry Rami Wehbi, DO, Monique K. I'm thrilled to share that my article has garnered significant attention, reaching 500 views! In it, I explore the challenges faced by nurses in today's society and organizations. Nursing is often stereotyped as a feminine role, and leadership is sometimes perceived as autocratic, creating a double burden for women in the field. Navigating these complex societal perceptions can be daunting. We recognize the unique barriers that women in nursing encounter, rooted in cultural and societal norms. Nursing is often associated more with caregiving than leadership, which can impede women's advancement. Furthermore, the misconception that caregiving roles are exclusively for women complicates matters further. I invite you to read my article, which delves into current evidence and potential solutions to address these issues. Innovative interventions are necessary to reshape the environment for women in nursing within the healthcare industry. Let's work together towards positive change! My research, ‘Organisational Strategies for Women Nurses to Advance in Healthcare Leadership: A Systematic Review,’ just reached 500 views! The pandemic has taken a toll on our healthcare workers, and a recent study in JAMA Health Forum reveals the alarming increase in their departures from the industry. As the worst of COVID-19 subsides, many dedicated staff members are seeking new opportunities in a bustling job market. This exodus, while accompanied by new hires, disrupts the continuity of care and can lead to poorer patient outcomes. The Johns Hopkins-led study, analyzing Census data from 2018 to 2021, highlights that women and Black workers are disproportionately leaving the health industry. The pandemic has made it even more challenging for employers to recruit Black workers, potentially exacerbating diversity issues within the workforce. The exit rates have been consistently higher than pre-pandemic levels, leaving healthcare providers with less-experienced staff. At the beginning of the pandemic, most departing workers did not have alternative employment prospects. However, by the end of 2021, they were predominantly leaving for jobs outside of healthcare, indicating a decline in the industry's competitiveness in the broader labor market. It is important to recognize the long-term effects of the pandemic on the healthcare workforce and act to address burnout and strengthen workforce pipelines. This study serves as a reminder for policymakers and stakeholders to prioritize the mental well-being of our healthcare heroes. #SharedHarvest #MentalHealth #HealthCare #HealthcareHeroes #postpandemic #mentalwellbeing #covid #anxiety #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #mindhealth

On January 22, 2024, the New York State Senate Health Committee is scheduled to consider a bill that would require anti-bias training for every medical student, medical resident, and physician assistant student. The mandated training would include “awareness of and elimination practices for both implicit and explicit bias,” and students would be required to demonstrate “competence in the coursework or training required.” The sponsors of Bill S.319-Salazar/A.5625-Reyes argue that their bill would “enhance gender justice by improving bias awareness in medical students, whether said implicit and explicit biases impact the LGBTQ community or “other vulnerable members of our communities.” The sponsors also contend that the absence of required anti-bias training “could hamper the goal of health equity for all.” While every patient deserves to be treated with competence and respect when he or she seeks medical care, state-sponsored lessons on sexuality, gender identity, and other favorite topics of left-wing politicians would do nothing to help achieve that goal. At best, such training is a waste of time. At worst, efforts to root out “implicit bias” could prove to be nothing more than an exercise in divisiveness, scapegoating, and denigration of persons with Christian or conservative perspectives. New Yorkers need competent medical personnel, not indoctrinated social justice warriors.

Balancing Act: Women in Medicine 🏥 Women physicians often find themselves pulled in numerous directions, juggling demanding careers and personal lives. This time of year, it can be even more challenging with the added pressure of holidays, staff absences, and personal obligations. The pressure from juggling so many conflicting priorities can sidetrack even the most promising medical careers. The key? Setting boundaries to carve out time for self-care and family.
