LIFTING PLANS: ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS Working for almost 20 years in the oil and gas industry, one of the most important aspects during construction are lifting activities. The main criterion for safe and effective lifting is the drawing up of a lifting plan. Let us look at the essential elements together. ✅ Load details: Specifies the type of load: e.g. building materials, machinery or components. Indicate the weight of the load in terms of tonnes or kilograms. Describe the dimensions of the load: height, width and length. Consider any special characteristics of the load, such as fragility or dangerousness. Lifting Equipment and Gears: Elaborate on the details of the equipment involved: crane, overhead crane, tracks, etc. Specifies the types of straps, hooks or attachments needed to lift the load. Evaluate the lifting capacity of the equipment and ensure that it is adequate for the intended load. ✅ Personnel in charge: Define the roles within the team: coordinator, crane operator, signalman, etc. Indicate the skills required for each role. Ensure that personnel are trained to handle the equipment and follow safety procedures. ✅ Lifting method: Describe the sequence of operations for lifting: positioning, lifting, moving and final positioning. Include safety measures: e.g. safety distance, signalling, use of safety belts. Clearly communicate instructions to the personnel involved. ✅ Requirements for assembling or disassembling Lifting Equipment (if any): If the equipment requires assembly or disassembly, provide detailed instructions. Consider the time sequence for these operations. ✅ Means of Communication: Ensure that personnel can communicate effectively during the operation. Use radios, hand signals or other appropriate means to coordinate actions. ✅ Physical and Environmental Conditions: Assess the terrain where the lifting will take place: flat, sloping, uneven. Consider the weather: wind, rain, snow. Identify obstacles such as trees, buildings or power lines. Always remember: safety is the top priority! 🛡️ #lifting #LiftingPlan #construction #OilAndGas #HSE #CarloAlghisiAndPartners

Given Conbit's involvement in numerous offshore brownfield projects, inquiries regarding hot works combined with rope access are frequent occurrences. Personally, I welcome such questions as they underscore our clients' concern for personnel safety. This post aims to shed light on the complexities of combining rope access with hot works in offshore settings. When merging hot works with tasks at height, additional risks emerge alongside those typically associated with each hazard. While the most apparent risks of hot works like fire and burns are often acknowledged and managed, the risk assessment process must encompass the potential impact on tasks at height. Various factors can lead to complications during hot works: 🚫 Inadequate consideration for extended rescue times and complexity. 🚫 Elevated risk of equipment and rigging damage. 🚫 Changes in first aid requirements and the necessity for meticulous casualty management. 🚫 Fire and explosion hazards, demanding heightened fire-fighting measures. 🚫 Enhanced need for proper work positioning to minimize accidental movement or slipping. 🚫 Increased demand for personal protective equipment, potentially hindering access and egress. 🚫 Constrained or restricted spaces affecting access, egress, and rescue operations. 🚫 Risks associated with rigging and selection of backup devices, where minimal contact could cause damage. 🚫 Incorrect choice of ropes and rigging, potentially compromising hazard protection. To mitigate these risks, it's imperative to: 🚦 Conduct a comprehensive risk assessment, considering the impact of heat on all aspects of the task. 🚦 Account for how hot works affect rigging, access, egress, task execution, rescue procedures, flame retardant ropes, first aid, and other job elements. 🚦 Technicians should take precautions against personal injury, such as sealing gaps to prevent hot materials from entering clothing. 🚦 Certain hot work tasks may necessitate special protection for rope access equipment, like heat-resistant protectors around ropes in the immediate work area. Additional considerations include adopting an engineering approach to hot works in rope projects. This involves visualizing all steps, gathering stakeholders for thorough project evaluation, addressing potential risks, updating plans with mitigations, and acknowledging residual risks. Furthermore, employing skilled rope access technicians experienced in hot works is crucial. Experience plays a pivotal role in safety and efficiency. For further insights, feel free to reach out to Conbit. This post draws inspiration from an IRATA International topic sheet, reflecting Conbit's proud membership in the organization. #offshore #ropeaccess #decommissioning #welding
