The USDA is expanding crop insurance options for specialty and organic growers beginning with the 2025 crop year. USDA’s RMA is expanding coverage options by allowing enterprise units by organic farming practice, adding enterprise unit eligibility for several crops, and making additional policy updates. This is the first of several announcements this summer, which will include the expansion of the shellfish policy in the Northeast and new coverage for grape growers in the West and beyond. How Do You Feel About Crop Insurance? Is your ag operation even eligible for crop insurance? And if it was, would you sign up? This is such a ticklish issue. It's all based on "Good Farming Practices." But what if those farming practices disincentivize you from planting cover crops, or rolling them instead of chemical termination, or trying different crops in your rotations? Can we continue using the same farming practices legislated in 1938 and call them "good" when 21st century science tells us otherwise? An update to the USDA’s Good Farming Practices Handbook affirms the use of conservation practices as good farming practices for the Federal crop insurance program. The change removes a barrier to adopting more climate-friendly practices, as the condition to maintain yields has been removed. All conservation practices offered by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service are now recognized in the handbook, and appropriate uses of those practices will not impact crop insurance coverage. #Cropinsurance #organicfarming #riskmanagement #goodfarmingpractices #conservation #agriculture https://lnkd.in/eSEJti8G
