The most overused word on social media in 2024: authenticity.
Don’t lie, you’re just as tired of hearing it as I am 😴.
It’s been drilled into our brains 🧠 that for your brand to be successful on social media, you need to be authentic.
But what does it actually mean to be authentic on your social media and how can we practice it?
This was a hot topic of conversation that the panel at the Pretty Little Marketer IRL Event did a superb job of answering 🔥, and here’s what they said:
1. Stick to your values ✅.
Lily Thistlewood (Head of Performance Marketing at Adanola) shared the backlash Adanola faced last year when they announced on social media that they wouldn’t be discounting their items for Black Friday. Why? Because they value high quality and sustainability so discounting items would compromise these values. The outcome? They had the best week of sales ever, without a single discount 📈.
2. Don’t look at your competition 👀.
It’s a bold statement, I know. But Hannah Tudor’s work as aSocial Creative at McCann is proof that this works. Remember when Kate Moss made an appearance at Aldi during Manchester Fashion Week? You can thank Hannah and her team for that 😉 . If you want to appear authentic on social media, you need to do something that no one else is doing.
3. Authenticity lies in originality and being unique 💎. Kesheba Evans shared how she makes her UGC authentic by brainstorming unique ways of storytelling. Jumping on trends can be great, but people value creativity and originality and that's the key to being authentic.
So there’s 3 ways you can practice being authentic on social media. No need to cry every time you hear a social media guru say ‘just be authentic and you'll get 100k followers’.
