🌱 New Jurisdictional Initiative in the Peruvian Amazon 🌿 In May, key stakeholders in the district of Neshuya (Ucayali, Peru) co-designed a shared vision and action plan to announce a new jurisdictional initiative. The aim is to create a low-deforestation risk area with sustainable production in the context of the EUDR. The workshop brought together the Municipality of Neshuya, agro-producer organizations, and allies such as Earthworm Foundation, Earth Innovation Institute, the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, Solidaridad Latinoamérica, and Tropical Forest Alliance. The design of the Neshuya Jurisdictional Initiative is supported by Nestlé and USAID, and will be implemented with a landscape monitoring tool and public-private governance. On September 18, 2023, representatives from RDI (Dr. Elisabeth Rianawati, Nurulitha Andini Susetyo, and Maya Larasati) participated in a collaborative meeting hosted by the COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC AND INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANISATION (CSIRO) Australia. Alongside RDI, CSIRO extended invitations to iDE (International Development Enterprises) (Seng Kim Hian, PhD - Agronomy Director) and Fauna & Flora Cambodia (Enrico Barili - Project Manager). The primary focus of the discussion revolved around the issue of plastic waste in Cambodian agriculture, aligning with CSIRO's six-month research initiative aimed at reducing plastic waste within the agricultural sector in the Mekong Region. CSIRO's objective was to identify key stakeholders, research priorities, and potential areas for long-term projects, potentially targeting policy changes. During the meeting, participants shared their experiences related to projects in Cambodia, emphasizing the plastic's impact on smallholder and rural farmers, as well as the challenges associated with implementing a ban on single-use plastics. These experiences in Cambodia can be beneficial in the scoping study of future research in the Mekong Region. As a result of this productive meeting, RDI, iDE, and Fauna & Flora expressed their willingness to engage in future consultations and collaborate further with CSIRO's ongoing research efforts. This collaborative endeavour by CSIRO will kick off with an initial engagement workshop involving local stakeholders in Cambodia in early December. #RDIGlobal #GlobalThinkTank #ConnectwithRDI

IDH implements an integrated environmental approach to transition to climate-resilient agriculture, reduce product carbon footprints, and protect and restore natural ecosystems. In 2023, we started working on climate action roadmaps for businesses and policymakers, we piloted solutions in response to the EUDR, and we continued to convene public and private sector at landscape and national level. I am happy to have contributed to IDH’s mission through our work on deforestation-free cocoa in the #CocoaAndForestsInitiative in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana and the #RoadmapDeforestationFreeCocoa in Cameroon where we continue to push for impact for farmers and forests 👩🏾🌾 🍫 🌱 Find out more in our newly released IDH 2023 Annual Report here https://lnkd.in/ecw4dwK9 #IDH2023AR #LivingIncomes #RegenerativeAgriculture #LivingWages #GenderEquality

It was an honour to attend an enlightening workshop organised by the SEI — Stockholm Environment Institute in collaboration with the Avocado Society of Kenya, centered around the crucial theme of 'EU Market Access for Avocado Agribusinesses.' The workshop, seeking to engage industry players, dove into the dynamic intersection of agriculture, policy, climate-compatibility and sustainability. We delved deep into the complexities of accessing EU markets for East African Avocado agribusinesses and the impact of EU sustainability standards. A pivotal focus was unraveling challenges and opportunities that the region's trade encounters while aligning with the increasingly stringent environmental requirements for market access. Excited to be part of this transformative dialogue, bringing together representatives from avocado agribusinesses in Kenya who are instrumental in shaping the future of sustainable trade. Let's continue to bridge the gap between policy and practice in the avocado value chain. 🥑 #Agribusiness #Sustainability #EUMarketAccess #PolicyDialogue"

I was thrilled to be invited by MEST Africa to the annual Value Chain Huddle Agenda, which focused on two sectors: #Agriculture and #Finance. Led by ENYONAM MANYE GHFINESTFARMER in the agriculture session, we explored the topic of building a resilient and sustainable agricultural value chain through collaborative financing and partnerships. Collaborative financing refers to the use of multiple financial sources to support agricultural value chain development, including public and private funding, as well as innovative financial products such as impact bonds and green bonds. By combining collaborative financing and partnerships, stakeholders in the agricultural value chain can: •𝑰𝒏𝒗𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒔𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒔, such as climate-smart agriculture, water conservation, and biodiversity protection. •𝑰𝒎𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒇𝒂𝒓𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒔, who often have difficulty accessing traditional financing sources. •𝑹𝒆𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒆 𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒌 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒃𝒖𝒊𝒍𝒅 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 to disruptions to the agricultural value chain. •𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒆 𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒊𝒏 𝒏𝒆𝒘 𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒏𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒊𝒆𝒔 and practices that can improve the sustainability and resilience of the agricultural value chain. I am excited about the potential of collaborative financing and partnerships to transform the agricultural sector and create a more sustainable and equitable food system for all. Let's work together to build a resilient and sustainable agricultural value chain through collaborative financing and partnerships Together, we can create a more sustainable and equitable food system for all. The session opened with Joe Ray (RVO) introducing LLA and its principles—which are endorsed by the Dutch government—followed by David Mornout (MetaMeta), who shared practical insights and lessons from the Reversing the Flow program. We shared experiences from the Kenyan NGO IMPACT, which gave participants a clear and actionable picture of how LLA works in practice. Next, Sandra van Soelen (Simavi) and Tomi Haryadi (World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia) shared their experiences. Sandra discussed LLA within the Water Justice Fund, while Tomi highlighted the connections between LLA and social forestry in Indonesia. An engaging discussion followed in the second half of the session, where participants exchanged their experiences with LLA in various contexts. Key insights included: 💧The importance of reverse accountability. 💧Balancing locally-led initiatives with larger-scale processes. 💧Aligning LLA programs with government-to-government efforts. A detailed report on this session will soon be available in the recently launched open-access dossier on Locally-Led Adaptation at TheWaterChannel. This growing database of knowledge on LLA is open for your valuable contributions, and we encourage your participation.
