The concept of sustainable development was first introduced to me during my primary school years. It was presented in the context of environmental protection, emphasizing the need for societal progress that causes minimal harm to the environment, not only for our own benefit but also for future generations. For the past decade, my understanding of sustainable development has been limited to "protect the environment" and "reduce, reuse, recycle." In 2024, through one of my honors modules, I encountered the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). I realised that sustainable development is an 'umbrella' term that can be defined and applied flexibly across various industries. The principles and concepts of sustainable development can be adapted to suit different sectors. It is crucial to raise awareness of the UN SDGs among the general public. These goals can inspire innovation, guide business models, and be integrated into daily life in a simple way like supporting local business for example.
