On February 12, 2024, the Global Initiative on Loneliness and Connection (GILC) and HelpAge International collaborated to host a webinar dedicated to exploring evidence surrounding social isolation and loneliness in a number of lower and middle-income countries. With participation from 78 attendees representing 28 countries joining the webinar, it highlighted the importance of social isolation and loneliness worldwide. Moderated by GILC’s executive director Paul Cann OBE and HelpAge International’s Aidan Timlin and co-organized by our director Dr Hans Rocha IJzerman, the webinar featured the international experts Prof. Julianne Holt-Lunstad, Samia Akhter-Khan, and Dr Luzia Heu. The webinar started with a short film highlighting the crucial role of social connection in our health and well-being, followed by in-depth presentations by the three speakers. From evolutionary drivers to contextual and cultural factors, they shed light on the multifaceted nature of loneliness and social isolation. The engaging panel discussion also delved into the effects of social media on social isolation and loneliness. While acknowledging its potential as a lifeline for communication, the speakers suggested that social media can inadvertently exacerbate feelings of loneliness through social comparisons. It's clear: the conversation around loneliness is evolving, and innovative solutions are necessary. While there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, understanding contextual nuances is a good start to develop interventions across cultures. GILC and HelpAge International will continue to work together in organizing webinars and conducting the necessary work to better understand such contextual nuances to improve the plight of people worldwide, not only for the select few.
