You know when problems with literacy create problems in peoples' whole lives. I fix that.

It's back to school and teachers all over the world are preparing their courses, deciding what kind of writing tasks students will do. The contexts for writing have completely changed. Learning to write is still critical (don't let anyone tell you otherwise), but what was important 5 years ago is less important today. In my courses I'll be focusing on metacognition, perspective taking, problem finding, problem formulation, creativity, social critique, empathy, persistence, structure, and voice. #writing #education #teaching #teachingwriting #principals #academic

Great point about addressing writing as a conversation. On average my students improve about 18% in 12 weeks.

it’s an exciting time to be rethinking how we approach writing in the classroom! ✍️ As you highlighted, the emphasis on skills like metacognition, perspective-taking, and problem formulation is crucial for preparing students to navigate today’s complex world. 🌍 In my own teaching experience, I’ve found that integrating social critique and empathy into writing tasks not only enhances students’ critical thinking but also deepens their connection to the content. 💡 It’s about more than just writing—it’s about cultivating thoughtful, engaged citizens. I’m particularly inspired by your focus on persistence and structure, which remain essential in helping students articulate their ideas effectively. 📚 How do you see these skills evolving in the coming years as writing continues to change? Looking forward to seeing the impact of your innovative approach! 🚀

Every time I write formally, I think about how the writing process has evolved since I was a student in high school so long ago. The processes I learned then only partially apply in today's technological world. What has stayed the same, however, is the end product and the purpose it serves. While technology may make that process easier, learning how to write is still vital to achieving a significant result. A thought-provoking post, Professor Sean Wiebe.
