Our University of Minnesota Rural Health Research Center maternity care team just published the latest data on hospital-based obstetric service loss, updating our prior work on closures with data from 2010-2022. A couple of high-level findings: • The trend of rural closures from the prior decade continued. By 2022, close to 60% of rural counties had no hospital-based obstetric services. • While rare, we found a number of rural counties actually gained hospital-based obstetric services. • Rural noncore counties continue to be much less likely to have – and more likely to lose – hospital-based obstetric services than rural micropolitan counties. "Access to maternal health care has increasingly become unobtainable for many patients in the United States. Ongoing financial, staffing, and policy challenges have forced hospital administrators in both rural and urban areas to shutter their labor and delivery units, causing patients to travel longer distances or go without needed care. In particular, rural access to maternal care grows ever more challenging, with more than one-third of U.S. counties considered maternity care deserts.” Learn more and help raise awareness for #MaternalHealthAwarenessDay on the 23rd: https://lnkd.in/gy3gANFm

Today is Maternal Health Awareness Day. In the U.S., 1/3 of counties are in a maternity care desert and lack access to vital obstetric care, birth centers, or certified nurse-midwives. The maternal mortality rate is high at 17.4 deaths per 100,000 live births, with 84% preventable. Black women face a staggering 4x higher mortality rate than white women. At hatch health we’re committed to widening access to maternal health care, evidence-based education, and culturally competent care for better patient outcomes and experiences. #maternalhealth #maternalhealthawarenessday

The concerning trend of Freebirthing - giving birth without the presence of any healthcare professional - has captured the attention of the public in recent years, with expectant mothers opting for unassisted births due to pandemic fears and social media influence. Prof. Alison Fiander, one of our esteemed Women’s Health tutors, emphasises the need for proper medical support, highlighting the risks associated with unassisted births. At Learna we want to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of both mothers and babies, by ensuring we provide the appropriate education for healthcare workers to discuss options for childbirth with pregnant women. I invite you to read this insightful piece by my colleague Linda Genen, MD, MPH
The average recommended number of in-office visits for pregnant individuals is between 12 and 14. But with accessibility issues like maternity care deserts, that number is beyond reach for many. Writing in Physicians Practice, ProgenyHealth Chief Medical Officer, Linda Genen, MD, MPH, suggests that virtual medicine may be part of the solution to providing high quality, consistent care. https://hubs.ly/Q02kxdlP0

The maternity care system is broken. Poor maternal health outcomes are a national disgrace. Access to high quality, respectful maternal healthcare is unobtainable for many individuals throughout the United States. Mother Goose Health is joining American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) in raising awareness on this emergent issue. We are working collaboratively with patients, providers, payors, and other essential stakeholders within the maternal health ecosystem to develop targeted solutions and implement programs that significantly enhance access to holistic maternal care for all. It's time to transform this broken system into one that prioritizes the well-being of ALL mothers and ensures they receive the care they rightfully deserve. #MaternalHealthAwarenessDay #MaternalHealthReform #healthcaretransformation
