Important new piece on the relationship between internal displacement and mental health, focusing on Ukrainian IDPs since 2022. Mechanisms include loss of identity as well as social connections:
* 1st piece of the new academic year on RESEARCHING INTERNAL DISPLACEMENT * "The Unseen Battle: Unity and Trauma Amidst Ukraine's Forced Internal Displacement" - by Natalia Tsybuliak and Yana Suchikova - https://lnkd.in/e5qsrsmn The war in Ukraine, which began in 2022, has led to the internal displacement of an estimated 5 million individuals. Ukrainian IDPs are facing both the challenges of physically being forced from their homes to relocate elsewhere and the psychological challenges and mental health impact of residing in a conflict zone. This article discusses the importance of the mental health impact forced displacement plays in the compounding the trauma of Ukrainian IDPs. Highlighting how loss of identity and community as well as the disconnection from their loved ones leads to additional psychological strain, the authors address the stressors Ukrainian IDPs are facing while also identifying the key roles resilience and increased access to social support play in helping aid in mental health recovery. #displacement #idps #research #solutions #policy #humanitarian #ukraine #trauma #health #conflict Researching Internal Displacement Refugee Law Initiative Refugee Protection and Forced Migration Studies, School of Advanced Study Steven Miron Heather Livingood Natalia Tsybuliak

Being human, extending grace and parsing the nuance between innocent noncombatants and active terrorist participants is an exercise in widening one's aperture. To avoid reductive thinking, I try to read 'pro-Palestinian' posts, yet most are little more than antisemitic screeds that conflate Jews and Zionism interchangeably. It's a pity; I know ISIS, Hezbollah Hamas, et al., are not examples of a pious Islamic life. Yet, I'd estimate less than 10% of average posts advocating for ceasefire or leveled -- yet wholly inappropriate --allegations of apartheid make no effort to do the same. This op-ed about inculcated trauma, its author asserts, has become a hallmark of Palestinian existence and fails to address the root causes of said trauma beyond the conflict with Israel. Gaza will be rebuilt, but it will mean nothing if a society's civil institutions continue to be run by terrorists whose priorities are not good governance and working toward peace. It is easy for me to say living in the relative safety of America (although our democracy is not so well insulated either). Yet, until the Palestinian citizenry demands better government (Hamas, in power since a single election in 2006; Abu Mazen and Fatah, in power since the last election in Jan. 2005), rebuilding won't make a lick of difference. When will an "Arab Spring" reach the Jordan Valley and sliver of land along the Mediterranean? That's when we may finally see peace. (Of course, Bibi should be in jail by then, too).

One of the most insightful articles I have read in the past weeks. On empathy versus compassion, and what we can do in the ongoing Gaza Israel and Ukraine conflicts. Worth a read if you struggle to understand the numbness you might at times be feeling towards these and other conflicts, and how to help others. Hope this resonates with you as well. #helpingeachother #compassion #healthycommunities

Socio-economist | Director of The Development Hub | Podcast host | Advisor | Trainer | Research | Focus: power; intersectional feminism; decolonisation; resilience, poverty escape & bottom up growth.
I know more about #trauma than I would ever have chosen to. I have two children adopted from local authority care, both of whom are traumatised. I know only too well the profound and long-run impacts that childhood trauma can have. Its not something that people just 'get over' or 'grow out of'. Its horrible and it causes real suffering. I am also a #qualitative researcher, who has gathered #lifehistories and #oraltestimonies in #Cambodia, #Rwanda, Northern #Uganda and #Zimbabwe - all of which have experienced complex political emergencies, #conflict and #insecurity or #genocide. From this work, I have seen the long-run impact of conflict and insecurity on people’s lives, both through the loss of #assets and #livelihoods & through trauma, dislocation and damage to embedded social norms. Even 20 years later, people are traumatised from 'small' conflicts in which only a few people died and some cattle got stolen. Conflict has a long tail. I read this report ⬇ about Palestinian #children which graphically illustrates how they are living an almost intolerable #childhood. It is likely that there will be profound long-run impacts on them, their families and their #society. The trauma and its impact will likely be transmitted intergenerationally, affecting the individuals, their families, their communities and their society for decades to come. It doesn’t have to be like this. #intergenerational #trauma #freepalestine #ceasefirenow #peace Peace Direct Themrise Khan #shiftthepower #decolonise #decolonize https://lnkd.in/efb5XYcS
