Yesterday, ACFID and our members had the privilege of hosting The World Bank President Ajay Banga at ACFID’s offices here in Canberra. Alongside senior leaders from ACFID's diverse membership, we held a productive roundtable discussion. We heard insights from the President's visit to Fiji and Tuvalu, as well as his discussions with leaders at the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting. We also discussed shared priorities including advancing gender equality, multilateral development bank reform, climate action and poverty reduction in the Indo-Pacific. We'd like to thank the World Bank for their commitments to consult with civil society, and we look forward to building further on these productive discussions. In his latest for The Diplomat, #AP4D's Grant Wyeth situates the Future Made in Australia initiative within a broader trend of "#economic policy conditions... being made with national #security considerations". "Modern economic statecraft is less about a return to the protectionism of the past – at least for those other than Donald Trump – and more about strategic investments in key sectors deemed essential for future growth. This form of #statecraft seeks to be at the forefront of technological change, rather than seeking to prevent it." 🔗 Read the piece at https://lnkd.in/gn3kbe_T. Grant's piece references a recent AP4D paper, What does it look like for Australia to navigate a new era of #economicstatecraft, the result of five months of consultations with 40 experts from Australia and across the region. Explore the paper at https://lnkd.in/g5W8_QBz. The paper was launched in July by Assistant Minister for Trade and Assistant Minister for a Future Made In Australia Tim Ayres, and also featured contributors Naoise McDonagh, Phd, Helen Mitchell, Baogang He, Lahui AKO, PMD Pro (Practitioner), CAPM and Jon Berry.
