I remember working in an inpatient rehabilitation hospital setting and conducting speech therapy in the context of a hair appointment. The patient was a black girl and felt so uncomfortable to have been hospitalized without any products or support for textured hair. She barely wanted to participate in therapy. She just couldn’t focus with her hair all tangled from laying in the bed for so long. So, I braided her hair as we targeted goals for vocal amplitude, complex multi step direction of care and sequential patterning . She had to direct me clearly and intelligibly using her respiratory strength training exercises. She left that session glowing, showing off her hair to any and everyone who would listen. The next day the therapy manager (non SLP) called me into her office and questioned me about why I spent time “doing the patient’s hair” and not focusing on her progress in therapy. She’d overheard the patient beaming about having her hair braided and didn’t think I was providing “real therapy”. I spent over 30 minutes defending my clinical decisions to someone who didn’t even practice in my profession because she decided something was amiss. Precious charting time and productivity lost. Unfortunately, care that is culturally responsive and contextual is often devalued in predominantly white medical settings. The outcomes for patient progress and retention of diverse providers in these environments speak for themselves. As healthcare providers we must advocate for our patients to be seen and supported in ways that our salient to them if we are to provide true Value based care. During #NationalMinorityHealthMonth how can you make your patients feel seen and supported? #thatsjustmytwocents #medicalmicroaggressions #dei
#NationalMinorityHealthMonth is not only about raising awareness; it is about embracing #diversity and encouraging action to ensure #inclusivity. For the past two years, nurses at Children’s Minnesota have been dedicated to training health care workers to properly care for textured hair and adding products for textured hair. Patients may have their hair washed during their hospital stay, as proper treatment is a part of basic health care. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ebf2cMqX

Survivor of Medical Gaslighting | Seen on the Tamron Hall Show | Thought-Provoking Public Speaker and Solution Based Advocate Addressing Racial Disparities | CEO of Mone’s Healthy Eats
🌟 As I reflect on this Saturday, my mind is consumed with the state of healthcare. The growth of hospitals and urgent care in black communities, along with crowded parking lots and longer wait times, shows there are issues we need to address. 💡 Over a decade ago, I celebrated the opening of a community healthcare center in my neighborhood—an initiative I proudly supported as a patient and committee member. However, witnessing the proliferation of such centers now raises concerns. 📈 Wait times for doctor visits are on the rise, and we're witnessing a concerning uptick in cancer cases among young people—facts derived from data, not speculation. The cookie-cutter approach to healthcare lacks empathy, with rushed appointments becoming the norm. 🔍 As a solutions-focused advocate, I believe there's a better way. It's time to reimagine healthcare delivery, ensuring personalized care, and fostering empathy at every touchpoint. Let's work together to create a healthcare system that truly serves all members of our community🌱 #minorityhealthmonth #doctors #healthcare #publicspeaker #patientadvocate #healthliteracy #healtheducation #disparities #chronicillness #autoimmunedisease #solutionsbasedadvocate #saturday

Owner & founder of Intricate Art Spine & Body Solutions | PT, DPT, MTC, IAMTC, IADN Cert. Specialist
Is this a joke? By eliminating restrictions, you mean adding restrictions? Disgusting gas lighting by a pathetic medical board. PTs in Alabama LOST the ability to evaluate concussion patients BECAUSE of this BS. Hey APTA, you promised your practitioners autonomy and direct access in return for us becoming doctors. Doubling our educational years and increasing the cost of school by 1500% since 1990. In 1990 PTs w a bachelor degree made 55K a year. 55K in 1990 is equivalent to 130K today, just adjusting for inflation. In 2024 the average DPT salary is 95K. AND, only 20 states have unrestricted direct access, NOT including AL. So, with double the education and a 1,500% education cost, PTs are making less than we were 30 years ago AND we r currently LOSING access. Maybe make your outright lies a little less blatant. This is absolutely disgusting. https://lnkd.in/gRTj-Tit
The elimination of severe restrictions on direct access to physical therapist services in all states was reached earlier this year when Alabama became the last holdout state to move to a provisional direct access model. Read more. #PTAdvocacy

We Want Your Feedback! For our upcoming Enter and View Programme, we'll be focusing on two important areas of healthcare services in our community: hospital appointment systems and GP accessibility and their information and signage. Hospital Appointment Systems - Our first focus will be the systems used by hospitals to book your appointments. We want to hear your experiences with the hospital booking systems and how information about your appointments is provided to you. We'll share a short survey but to share your experience before, get in touch. GP Practices Accessibility - We'll be visiting various GP practices to observe the signage and information available to patients. Our goal is to ensure that practices are catering to the needs of people requiring additional support, including those with learning disabilities, sensory loss, neurodiverse conditions, dementia, and other disabilities. If you have any feedback regarding the accessibility of your GP practice, we'd love to hear from you. Share your feedback: 0161 974 0753 info@healthwatchstockport.co.uk

I'm proud to be a member of our Proliance DEI committee. Making our work environment more inclusive and equitable makes it a better place to work. As a mom of a kid on the spectrum, I am at Proliance because of the support I receive from my boss and everyone that I work with. I am truly grateful 🙏
