Thursday Thread ~ Cranes Lift More Than Material After a recent trip to Nashville, I came home to Reno with a vision of better, safer and more vibrant downtown, we need a Reno-vation. Just like Reno boasts the most warehouse building square footage per capita, I think Nashville wears the crown for the city with the most active cranes of any in the US in their skyline! As a commercial guy, the activity all around me was not only astonishing, it was inspiring. These cranes lift more than material, they lift hope, signal new confidence and captial investment. In last weeks thread I eluded that our two cities have many similarities but after my return and much reflection, I've come to realize that we're far behind the curve and a lot work is to be done. Our downtown has been hijacked by special interests and our city leaders have been derelict in their duties for more than a decade. Irreparable damage through their neglect of essential responsibilities such as urban planning and infrastructure maintenance have lead to a declining economic base while simultaneously allowing infrastructure to crumble and fail. Social unrest including unchecked vagrancy and skyrocketing housing costs have shown that our long term viability is certainly in question with those on the outside looking in. Stagnation isn't success. To thrive we must grow, a lot like we did coming out of the great recession. It starts by putting an end to the decade long dysfunction within our city leadership and backing leaders with big ideas. Next week's thread I'll try and provide a solution.
