Immune rejection is a major drawback with any cell therapy. One way to overcome this is to interfere with the immune recognition properties of the therapeutic cell by gene editing. For example, the HLA 1 system can be modulated by knocking out the B2M gene, which controls recognition of the therapeutic cell by the immune system.
