🌐💬 Throughout its lifespan, Gender #STI organized a series of co-design labs to enhance the gender perspective integration in STI through international dialogues. Have you heard of The Scully Effect? 👽 Dana Scully inspired a generation of girls to enter the field of STEM. 🧪👩🔬 Scully is personally my favorite female lead in a television series. 📺 She is intelligent, assertive, a problem solver, and a fighter. 🥷 In 2018, Fox partnered with the Geena Davis Institute to gather data around this phenomenon. 📈 Findings from the study showed: 1. Nearly two-thirds of women surveyed who work in STEM say Agent Scully served as a role model and increased their belief in the importance of STEM 2. Women who regularly watched "The X-Files" were 50% more likely to work in STEM than less frequent/non-watchers; 3. Women who watched "The X-Files" are 42% more likely to agree with the statement "I would encourage my daughter/granddaughter to enter a STEM field" than non-watchers. Representation matters. Parpart, the intersecting challenges faced by women in various contexts are explored, highlighting the importance of understanding women's lived experiences and embracing an intersectional feminist approach. Despite advancements in education and advocacy, patriarchal values continue to shape dysfunctional systems, perpetuating gender inequalities. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the chapters explore themes such as agency, patriarchy's impact on societal organization, and the urgent need for societal restructuring to combat these challenges. The edited volume advocates for an intersectional lens to comprehend the complex layers of oppression that women face today. During our discussion, we'll tackle the infamous #impostersyndrome and the lies we tell ourselves about it. Reshma believes that it's time to get to the root causes of imposter syndrome in women. Here are some key takeaways from her speech: - Imposter Syndrome is grounded in actual deficiency and tells us that maybe there is something wrong with us. But it's normal to feel like we don't fit in when the system wasn't built for lots of us. - It's our responsibility to fix the problem. While strategies like learning to say "no," finding a mentor, or power-posing can be helpful, they continue to place the burden on those who have never been the status quo. - Imposter Syndrome is inevitable. It is not. It is a distraction from the structural sexism, classism, and homophobia that is baked into the system in the first place. Let's take inspiration from Reshma and focus on being brave rather than being perfect. I recommend watching her whole speech - not just to learn about "bicycle face" 🚵♀️ - but for her brilliant insights about why it is not our job to overcome imposter syndrome.
