We need better storytelling in tourism. I have worked on both the B2C side and B2B side of tourism. The harmful storytelling practices I witnessed as a travel writer, communicating directly with (potential) travelers, is a big part of why I established Rooted and moved to the B2B side. I think there is immense potential in empowering travel service providers – from destination reps to travel agents – to tell better stories. This then trickles down to travel media and content creators and, ultimately, to travelers. It was so lovely to chat with Rebecca Woolford of Kiwano Tourism about this journey – and about the opportunity and potential I see within the tourism space to improve our storytelling … and so much more! (Because, after all, storytelling doesn’t exist in a silo!) On this episode of the Tourism Reset podcast (the second episode!), we talked about: > Why we need to switch FROM ‘community-based’ TO ‘community-led’ tourism > Inspiring case studies and trips that put women’s empowerment front and center > How witnessing a culmination of negative impacts from tourism changed my perspectives about tourism and, ultimately, my career path > The problems with travel brands focusing on ‘locals’ and why it’s super nuanced https://lnkd.in/ghqZTJx9

It's been a hot minute since I've been on a podcast, so I'm thrilled to share this recent conversation I had with Nicole Mahoney for Destination on the Left. Nicole and I always have a lovely time catching up, and this conversation is no different ... as we wandered all over the tourism spectrum. Some of the topics we touch on in this episode include: > How DMOs can discover the truly unique aspects of the places they represent -- and how they can share that story in a way that captivates travelers. > Why it's *so important* for us to reimagine a different vision of tourism. > Why we should shift from quantitative measures of success to qualitative ones. > How to amplify the voices and stories that have been side-lined by tourism in the past. > Helping travelers shift from passive visitors to active global citizens. > How responsible storytelling practices can help your destination stand out. Whew! Did you get all that? 😅 Listen to the full episode here: --- Does your destination need support in turning any of these ideas into action? I help organizations do this -- so get in touch!

We've seen it for decades; "Book now!" "Visit here!" when it comes to travel marketing. We've also seen the generic white sandy beaches speckled with palm trees or the luxurious shopping centers being advertised. But where is the emotion behind why we are booking that trip in the first place? What are we really looking to gain from that travel experience? How do we hope it makes us feel during and post trip? Travel is emotional. It is personal. In Episode 8 on The Travel Marketing Compass Podcast, I dive into the transformative power of travel while discovering how emotions shape tourism marketing and redefine our travel perspective. WE have our own PODCAST! 🎧 This is a pilot project aimed to go deeper into our role as a cluster but first and foremost to dive into our projects and how we can make the most impact for our industry and our members. The first episode is a talk between me and Magdalena Falter, PhD, our project leader in this field. The talk goes wide and touches on: · What are the main goals of the Iceland Tourism Cluster? · How does regenerative tourism differ from sustainable tourism? · What projects are currently being developed in the Iceland tourism cluster? The Iceland tourism cluster serves as a network that enhances the competitiveness of tourism companies through collaboration and value creation. Their primary focus areas include sustainable tourism, innovation, and digital solutions. Sustainable and regenerative tourism is one of the cluster's key focus areas, aiming to create long-term value while preserving Iceland's natural beauty. Building bridges among various stakeholders is essential for fostering collaboration in the tourism industry. This includes engaging universities, municipalities, and banks to share knowledge and resources. The cluster emphasizes the importance of addressing current challenges in tourism by connecting problem solvers with industry needs. Connecting individuals can lead to innovative solutions and collaborative problem-solving that may not have occurred otherwise. This network creates valuable opportunities within various projects, fostering growth and sustainability. The Iceland Tourism Cluster is dedicated to supporting entrepreneurs and travel tech companies by fostering collaboration and providing essential resources. The cluster in cooperation with the Tourism Board has been hosting the Iceland Travel Tech exhibition for five years to connect tech and tourism companies, enhancing knowledge and collaboration. The discussion revolves around the importance of regenerative tourism and its unique approach to sustainability. This new mindset encourages positive impacts on destinations while engaging travelers in responsible practices. Regenerative tourism is not merely a rebranding of sustainability; it represents an evolution in responsible tourism. It focuses on creating positive impacts rather than just minimizing harm. Education and collaboration are essential for promoting regenerative tourism in the Nordics. This new approach emphasizes giving back and using tourism to create positive impacts in communities. Regenerative tourism is framed as a transformative concept, shifting from traditional sustainability to a deeper commitment to nourishing communities and environments. This reflects a more holistic view of tourism. The conversation highlights the need for proactive strategies in tourism, advocating for a controlled and thoughtful approach rather than a reactive one. This mindset aims to ensure tourism benefits everyone involved. https://lnkd.in/dvPj8Xqh
