CES 2024: More Sophisticated Predictive Maintenance in a Vehicle Context Attendees to CES this week will be the first to witness a new portfolio of AI-based solutions aimed at extending the operational reliability and assuring the long-term safety of key automotive parts. The result of in-depth technical collaboration between Infineon Technologies and Aurora Labs, these solutions will enable detailed monitoring to be conducted in relation to the systems involved in vehicle steering and braking, as well as airbag deployment and suchlike. This will mean that indicators of where repair or replacement work may be needed can be spotted much earlier. They make use of Aurora Labs’ Line-of-Code Intelligence (LOCI) artificial intelligence (AI) technology, which has been implemented on the 32-bit TriCore AURIX TC4x microcontroller units (MCUs) from Infineon. Running vehicle functions in shadow mode allows safe testing of new vehicle functions at scale, based on real-world conditions. Shadow mode involves running two versions of a software component in parallel: one live version that impacts other components and another shadow version that does not. This helps teams gather data on software performance and compare it to current production versions. For example, with adaptive cruise control (ACC), a vehicle sensor detects the distance to the car in front, and the electronic control unit (ECU) processes this data. Deploying a new ACC variant in shadow mode lets us compare its performance with the current version. Once sufficient data shows the new ACC variant is better, it can be rolled out to the entire fleet. For complex features like Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), shadow mode enables safe training and testing in the field.
