The 2024 World Drug Report is out! In addition to the regular update of all data on drug demand and supply, this year we have in-depth analysis on: -Golden Triangle: another example of how organized crime groups exploit instability to expand drug production and trafficking that in turn trigger expansions to other crimes affecting communities and the environment - Impact of the drastic reduction of Afghan opium production, including the threat of nitazenes, a group of very potent synthetic opioids that have already been responsible for overdoses deaths in Europe - Criminal justice response: new global data show that more than half of people into the criminal justice system for drug-related offences are arrested, prosecuted and convicted for drug use possession and use. Asia and Africa are the most punitive regions. - Synthetic drugs and gender: while considerably more men use drugs than women, the percentage of women who use synthetic drugs or are arrested for trafficking synthetic drugs is higher than plant-based drugs and once a woman starts using or trafficking drugs suffers a higher level of harm than men - Cannabis legalization and the psychedelic renaissance: drug policy changes have different impact and bring different challenges depending on the context - Right to health and drug use: a five-dimensional framework to look at services accessibility, acceptability, and quality and promote non-discrimination, non-stigmatization and participation of people who use drugs and those around them. #unodc #drugs #data Explore the report 👇 👇 👇 👇 👇 https://lnkd.in/dbQEVVYM -

The headline should scare everyone that deals with overdose and illicit drugs. I just confirmed that Aegis Sciences Corporation can test for Isotonitazene (similar to fentanyl) and N-Desethyl Isotonitazene (50x more potent than fentanyl). As a reminder fentanyl is 50x more potent than heroin and 100x more potent than morphine. Aegis Sciences Corporation has been able to test for these two nitazene drugs for over a year. This is just an example of 120+ current and risky synthetic drugs that is surfacing across the US today that Aegis can detect that your current lab may not. You can’t manage what you can’t measure. Reach out and let’s talk about how our latest innovations can power your current medication monitoring protocols. https://lnkd.in/g6X4-Rdv

The Middle East Is Awash in Drugs Captagon Has Fueled Violence and Aided Tyrants—and Meth Could Be Next By Vanda Felbab-Brown April 11, 2024 Methamphetamine seizures are already increasing in the Middle East and surrounding countries. Turkey, for example, seized 78 tons of methamphetamine in 2022, a twofold increase from the amount seized in 2019. And Jordan seized 45 tons of methamphetamine in the first nine months of 2022—20 times more than during the same period in 2021. Governments in the region must therefore focus on shutting down meth labs wherever they find them and clean up the ports of entry—such as Abu Dhabi and Dubai—through which Australia-bound methamphetamine flows. Arab governments should shut down websites hawking synthetic drugs, driving users onto the Dark Web, where fewer will be able to locate sellers. Otherwise, the Middle East’s drug problems will worsen as users gravitate toward a substance that is deadlier and more addictive than captagon.

The supply of illegal drugs in Scotland seems “increasingly toxic and unpredictable”, a report has found, as powerful synthetic opioids appear more often in the market. Nitazenes and xylazine, both of which can easily lead to overdoses, are increasingly showing up in sample testing by public health experts – sometimes being mis-sold as other less powerful drugs. However, suspected drug deaths are down by 8% during the period between March and May this year while drug-related hospital admissions have fallen by 11% in the first quarter of the year. The data is contained in the quarterly Rapid Action Drug Alerts and Response (Radar) report from PHS (Public Health Scotland). It found incidents of naloxone administration – designed to prevent overdoses – were up by 5% and emergency department attendances rose by 2%. The drugs most commonly associated with harm are benzodiazepines, cocaine and opioids while new synthetic drugs are playing an increasing role in harm. Earlier this month, an updated warning was issued about nitazenes being mis-sold as heroin or diazepam and unexpectedly ending up in the drugs supply. "Meth up, alcohol down: What wastewater testing tells us about Australia's drug use" Australia's consumption of illicit drugs including methamphetamine and cocaine has risen while alcohol intake continues to decline, according to new wastewater analysis. More than 10.5 tonnes of methamphetamine was consumed in the year to August 2023, up 17 per cent from the year before. Meanwhile, Australians consumed a little more than 4 tonnes of cocaine in the same period, up 19 per cent from the previous year. These insights come from the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) National Wastewater Drug Monitoring Program, which estimates drug consumption by measuring 12 different substances — both legal and illegal — in wastewater samples. Key Points: 💧 Australians spent more than $10 billion on methamphetamine in just 12 months, the country's criminal intelligence agency has estimated. 💧 Its new report says Australia's consumption of illicit drugs including meth and cocaine has climbed after a sharp drop during COVID-19. 💧 What's next? ACIC says the wastewater data will help guide its drug-market busting activities, while experts say it's just one part of the puzzle when looking at drug trends in Australia. https://lnkd.in/gWfrzzXu

Help us save lives by educating yourself and talking to others about the dangers of fentanyl. Join us in observance of Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day on Wednesday, August 21. Explore DEA's resources on fentanyl prevention and awareness: DEA Faces of Fentanyl Exhibit | Commemorate the lives lost from fentanyl poisoning.
