August is National Civic Health Month. The National Civic League has created a civic health index that includes seven components of community-based civic capital: engaged residents, inclusive community leadership, collaborative institutions, embracing diversity and equity, authentic communication, a culture of engagement, and shared vision and values. Here in Arkansas, it is in our best interests, and in the best interests of our children and grandchildren, that we elect leaders who make it their mission to create and sustain civic health infrastructure that empowers the citizens of Arkansas to build livable communities where we all can thrive together. Read the 2023 Arkansas Civic Health Index, that I co-authored, to find out what our elected officials should be thinking about to improve our state's civic health: https://lnkd.in/gqaPARWU

Over the last two years, Blue Cross NC, led by our CEO, Tunde Sotunde, embarked on our Extra Miles Tour. This was an effort to get out of our offices, hit the road (we traveled more than 11,000 miles!) and #listen to the communities and people we #serve. I’m proud to share with you Blue Cross NC's Extra Miles Tour report. This was no ordinary listening tour. The conversations and experiences we had along the way are helping us think outside the box. We're exploring how we engage with the communities we serve and where there are new opportunities to convene and collaborate. This report outlines some of the key takeaways from our journey. The lessons and observations gathered here (plus the great ideas that we couldn’t share in such a limited space) are helping us create the roadmap for our work ahead and providing a better picture of where to focus resources and energies. This report represents an important milestone, but it isn’t a wrap-up by any stretch of the imagination. It’s the first step in the next leg of our journey to make health care better for all. Stay tuned to see what's next! https://lnkd.in/dd4JZThf

“Let’s create a future where technology empowers individuals—where data privacy is a fundamental right, and people have the power to control and benefit from their personal information.”
Revolutionizing Patient Data Monetization: The MyRxWallet Approach In today’s digital age, healthcare systems are sitting on mountains of patient data, often collected through EHRs and other digital platforms. This data holds immense value for innovations like precision medicine, drug discovery, and even AI models, yet, as a society, we continue to grapple with one essential question: Who should benefit from this data? At MyRxWallet, we believe the answer is clear—patients should. After all, it’s their data. Currently, many healthcare systems and startups debate the ethics of commercializing patient data without direct consent. While some institutions take a cautious approach, others rush into the market without considering the patient’s rights. But why not empower patients to have control and directly benefit from their own data? Through MyRxWallet’s blockchain-powered platform, we are creating a future where patients have full ownership of their health data, and they can monetize it when they choose. Using decentralized and tamper-proof technologies, patients can securely share anonymized health data for research, clinical trials, or drug development—all while being compensated for it. This not only empowers patients but also opens new doors for healthcare innovation. Our vision isn’t just about protecting data—it’s about creating a new healthcare ecosystem where patients are stakeholders in their health journey and benefit financially from the value their data generates. At MyRxWallet, we aren’t just building technology; we’re building patient empowerment. Let’s change the conversation. Let’s give patients control over what’s rightfully theirs. #Blockchain #HealthcareInnovation #DataMonetization #PatientData #DataOwnership #AI #MyRxWallet #Web3 #HealthcareTransformation

"I believe our mother practiced what is now known as structurally competent and culturally responsive care, in which the entire complex nature of a patient’s background and the social context in which they live, work, love and pray is considered during evaluation. And people loved her for it. She wasn’t just taking care of patients. She was tending to her neighbors.” Uché Blackstock, MD These words from Uche’s book, LEGACY, deeply resonated with me because they speak to the power of role modeling and commitment to #community. In many ways, it’s similar to the work I saw my parents do as a child. 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽 Long before I knew what all of the words and nomenclature was around health equity, what I saw as a child was my late father paying home visits to his patients and people in our neighborhood. After my father passed away, my mother then picked up the mantle, building and leading a nonprofit clinic named in my father’s memory that delivered inexpensive kidney care and accessible health education in language and visuals, which resonated with our multicultural community in Trinidad and Tobago. 🇹🇹 This work was my mother’s side hustle which she was relentlessly committed to until she too passed on. There is so much power in what we observe and see from those who’ve come before us. 🙏🏽 Uche Blackstock’s story, part of which is excerpted in this recent The Washington Post piece, is a testament to all of those things. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY.... The value of having medical care from and by those from our #culture and #community. Uche talks about the importance of culturally responsive care and the events that led to the evaporation of Black physicians in the US. Take a read via the link below. 👇🏽 Most importantly, buy and read Uche’s book. 🔗 Link to purchase in comments. #healthcare #leadership #equity Photo credit: The Washington Post. ++++++++++++++++++++++++ Hi 👋🏽 I'm Abenaa Hayes, an award-winning communications executive who specializes in healthcare, inclusion and health equity.
