Northern Health Mental Health Division is bringing together medical, nursing, allied health, legal counsel and lived experience staff to discuss and redefine admission pathways for mental health consumers. Dr Daniel Crompton, Director, Emergency Services, Northern Health believes, “For too long now, mental health patients have had too few options in the community to seek help. Limited service availability means that many people living with mental illness receive care and support only at times of crisis. This has led to a risk-averse model of care in which people do not receive therapeutic and psychosocial supports and do not receive support early enough to aid recovery .” Dr Vinay Lakra, Divisional Director, Mental Health Division, Northern Health says, “Providing a timely and appropriate care for those who are acutely unwell with a psychiatric illness is very important as delays in treatment can lead to poorer outcomes. It requires a whole of system approach to provide high quality treatment including a focus on preventing relapses." It's World Mental Health Day 2024 Mental health is a critical focus for healthcare providers and the pharmaceutical industry alike. In many regions, shortages of mental health professionals have created "mental health deserts." Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Physician Assistants/Associates (PAs) are bridging this gap, playing pivotal roles in expanding access to care and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health. At POCN, we recognize the strategic importance of mental health in today’s pharmaceutical landscape. NPs and PAs are not only key influencers in delivering mental health treatments but also drive improved patient outcomes through their ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Their advanced training equips them to provide holistic care that directly impacts patients' lives—particularly in underserved areas. By addressing mental health needs and partnering with patients for ongoing care, NPs and PAs are creating healthier communities nationwide. Pharma marketers: it’s time to include these essential healthcare providers in your strategies to optimize patient care and outcomes in the mental health space. Learn more about the impact of NPs and PAs and how to engage them in your brand strategy at POCNgroup.com. #MentalHealthAwareness #WorldMentalHealthDay #PharmaMarketing #NPsAndPAs #MentalWellness #HealthcareStrategy #POCN

Addressing Such challenges of drug and substance abuse among adolescents and youths requires a holistic approach that combines education, community engagement, and healthcare support. Comprehensive prevention programs should be implemented in schools and communities to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and its impact on lung health. Engaging parents, educators, and community leaders in open dialogues can create a supportive environment that discourages drug use. Access to mental health services and counseling is crucial to address underlying issues that may lead to substance abuse. Healthcare providers should offer regular screenings and early intervention programs to detect and manage respiratory conditions promptly. Further, promoting healthy lifestyle choices, such as physical activities and stress management techniques, can help youths develop resilience against peer pressure and the temptation to experiment with drugs. Through a coordinated effort that includes education, support, and healthcare, we can effectively mitigate the impact of substance abuse on the lung health of young individuals.

Levels of care and ensuring that consumers have the appropriate support for their mental health challenges are detrimental to the prognosis as well as to the overall well-being of the family and the consumer. Too often consumers are subject to the bureaucracy of the system and programs that act in a "one size fits all" manner which does not consider the individual needs and level of support needed for each consumer. To ensure that consumers can recover, it is important to provide support services such as case management, medication management services, routine medical evaluations, and therapeutic services based on the client's level of need.

Reducing mental illness stigma for clinicians Stigma surrounding mental illness comes in many forms. Stigma creates barriers to care and can place people at risk when they do not seek needed care. In addition to those impacting our patients, these are issues that can impact professionals as well. All too often, there are licensing and credentialling forms to complete asking us- doctors, nurses, and other disciplines- intrusive questions about our mental health that have nothing to do with our current ability to provide safe and effective care. These last few years have begun to reflect beneficial changes in this area. I am very pleased to share that Carilion’s medical staff has removed such intrusive language from its credentialing requirements and the Virginia Medical licensing board has similarly changed its questions. Nationally, the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes’ Foundation is advocating for and tracking these efforts in stigma reduction. Twenty-nine states have made effective changes for physician licensure and four nursing licensure boards have moved to eliminate intrusive, inappropriate questions. It is a good start and one I hope rapidly expands across the nation as a standard. Eliminating barriers to care for clinicians is a critical step in expanding access to care for all who are in need. https://lnkd.in/eEF8YRBi
