As part of #nationalapprenticeshipweek, apprentices at Prysmian Group share their experience of launching a career in STEM and why they chose the apprenticeship pathway… "Coming from a non-STEM background, the leap into becoming a project engineer seemed daunting at first. However, with the support of Prysmian and my colleagues, it has been a thrilling adventure so far merging practical, hands-on learning with academic rigour. It's a blend that's both challenging and deeply fulfilling. What makes a degree apprenticeship stand out is the immersive experience. It's not just about theories and concepts; it's about applying them in real-world scenarios. This dynamic environment has been a game-changer, allowing me to grow skills and confidence daily." #STEMazing at Prysmian. 📣 Q&A with Enerveo Apprentice, Toni 📣 ❓Interviewer: What inspired you to do an electrical apprenticeship? 👷♂️Toni: I've always been a technical person who loves working with my hands. When I was younger, I got a bit fed up with being told that university was the only way to progress. After doing my own research, I decided to go down the apprenticeship route. ❓Interviewer: Can you tell me about your apprenticeship experience and some of your proudest achievements? 👷♂️Toni: I really enjoyed the balance of work and college, and getting paid while learning without incurring debt was a big plus. Early in my apprenticeship, I was given a lot of responsibility because my supervisors saw my potential. They gave me small projects to manage and provided feedback, which helped me learn quickly and gain confidence. By Year 2, I was managing my own team. My supervisor told me they trusted me more than any other apprentice they'd had at our depot, which made me incredibly proud. It was challenging but exciting to be trusted and given the chance to prove myself. ❓Interviewer: What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship? 👷♂️Toni: Just go for it! An apprenticeship is an amazing way to start your career. Be ready to work hard and stay curious. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and take on new challenges. The hands-on experience and the support you get from mentors are invaluable. Plus, you get paid to learn, which is a huge bonus. If you’re passionate about a trade, an apprenticeship is definitely the way to go. Do you want to earn whilst you learn? ❓Q&A with Enerveo Apprentice, Ben👷♂️ ❓ 📣What inspired you to sign up for an apprenticeship with Enerveo? 👷♂️I wanted to do an electrical apprenticeship because it’s a solid trade with lots of different skills to learn. It mixes hands-on work with technical stuff, which sounded interesting to me. Plus, I knew it would lead to a stable career with lots of opportunities. 📣How has your overall experience been so far? 👷♂️It’s been awesome! I’ve really enjoyed it and I’m glad I chose this path after school. The training is great, and I got to work on real projects right away. I’m really proud of myself for finishing my four-year apprenticeship and passing all my college exams the first time. It was tough, but totally worth it. 📣What challenges have you encountered? 👷♂️I started the apprenticeship at 17, straight out of school, and I’d never had a job before. Everything was new, from the work itself to meeting lots of new people. But it really helped me build my social skills and get confident talking to people of all ages and backgrounds. 📣What did you enjoy most about your apprenticeship and why would you recommend it to others? 👷♂️ I loved the mix of learning and doing real work. Every day was different, so it never got boring. The support from my mentors and colleagues was amazing, and I always felt part of a team. I’d definitely recommend this apprenticeship to anyone looking for a challenging and fulfilling career. It’s a great way to earn while you learn, and the skills you get are super valuable. Plus, it feels great to see the results of your hard work. 📣Any last comments? 👷♂️Just go for it! An apprenticeship is an awesome way to start your career. When applying for apprenticeships, you need to "make yourself stand out," explains ahmed, an Electrical Engineering Degree Apprentice at our Luton site. "Many people earn good grades, but not everyone takes the initiative to be unique. Gain practical experience; seek out small projects that contribute to your growth. Doing so will set you apart in interviews and make you a more appealing candidate to potential employers."
