Our Environmental, Health & Safety practice was retained to manage the closure of two independent coal combustion residual ponds in compliance with United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) regulations.
John Dulude, Senior Vice President, and Energy & Environmental Advisory service line lead, shares, “We identified and mitigated the environmental and regulatory risks of coal combustion residual ponds to the satisfaction of the regulatory authorities. That mitigation prevented the potential for heavy metals such as arsenic, mercury, selenium, boron, and cadmium from flowing into the adjacent soil and groundwater.”
Working closely with state regulators, the ponds were connected to an existing clearwater pond, eliminating the need to backfill over 14 acres to a depth of 25 feet. This configuration reduced project expenses by over $12 million, increased onsite water storage capacity, and enhanced local wildlife and fishery habitats.
