Juniper Advisory delves into the impact of hospital consolidation on access to care, offering new insights into the debate over local control versus system affiliation. Jordan Shields, Partner, examines how joining larger health systems affects access and complexity of care. Amid concerns that consolidation might reduce local services, the article reveals that compared to standalone hospitals, organizations that join larger systems provide enhanced access to both community services, like obstetrics, and tertiary services. This analysis challenges prevailing assumptions and highlights the benefits of system affiliations for community hospitals. Band-Aid Station or Tertiary Center? The high prevalence of frailty and discapacity in emergency care indicates the need to accordingly configure healthcare systems and plan workforces. This study from the European Taskforce in Geriatric Emergency Medicine, in which I had the pleasure to participate as a site coordinator, shows the windows of opportunity for system configuration and workforce planning to focus on the patient from an integrated point of view. https://lnkd.in/e2dj8ttm

The Guardian: NHS faces ‘tipping point’ in England where most appointments will not be with GPs "Rapidly falling number of family doctors will harm ‘continuity and quality’ of care according to new research. That is the conclusion of an extensive piece of new research that also shows one in five surgeries has shut and the number of patients each family doctor looks after has soared over the last decade. Falling GP numbers delivering the same number of appointments per 1,000 patients seems unsustainable,” warn the researchers from University College London and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM)." https://lnkd.in/e3DkzZd4 #pwME #MECFS #MyalgicE #MyalgicEncephalomyelitis #LongCovid #PostCovid #Comorbidities #GPs #PrimaryCare

Plan 5 min to read the stories in this article. Powerful! Sad! Maddening! Motivating! Feel the realities of the primary care crisis from real family physicians and real people struggling to get access care and the tolls faced by both. We must do better. How can we mobilize a collective to implement an organized strategy for change? See www.TeamPrimaryCare.ca that tried to make a start but lacked system willingness to support a sustainable structure with resources to escalate its work.
