What is the History of Hari Merdeka? Hari Merdeka, which translates to "Independence Day" in Malay, is a significant day of pride and historical importance for Malaysia. Key moments in Malaysia’s path to independence include: 1948: The Malayan Emergency begins, with the British colonial government facing a communist insurgency. 1956: The Treaty of London is signed, setting the stage for Malaya’s independence. August 31, 1957: Tunku Abdul Rahman, the first Prime Minister, declares independence for the Federation of Malaya. 1963: The Federation of Malaysia is formed, uniting Malaya, North Borneo (now Sabah), Sarawak, and Singapore (which later separated in 1965).

SOMETHINGS OLD, SOMETHINGS BORROWED, CREATING SOLID NATIONS 1. Botswana and Malaysia are two great examples of countries where the post-colonial leaders/rulers sat down after independence. 2. Rather than simply continuing with colonial-lefts-behind governance structures, they strategised and innovated to arrive at national structure that take bits of British colonialism but more of their pre-British systems and came out with a very successful and uniquely blend of their own. 3. Crucially the elected leaders and representatives are not supreme … but power is somewhat diffused. 4. Nigeria’s 1963 Constitution-making was the nearest Nigerian elites got to thinking along similar lines.

For years, Indonesian people have been propagandized about the 30 September Movement on 30 September-1 October, 1965 (which killed six generals) which is always said to be carried out by the Communist Party of Indonesia. As the result of that accusation, the Indonesian government through its army, carried out mass killings targeting members and sympathizers or, let's say, alleged sympathizers of the party which resulted in the deaths of 500,000 to 1,000,000 people. I'm not a communist but what the Indonesian government did at that time was a crime against humanity, the history of it has mostly been erased or skipped. A black stain in the history of the Republic of Indonesia, very bad. I don't want to go into too much detail about this since I'm still an Indonesian citizen, I also generally don't really like talking about the government of the Republic of Indonesia, it's not comfortable for me.
