The job market is competitive for college seniors, but don't lose hope! Companies are still hiring into spring and summer, albeit slightly fewer than in previous years. Graduates securing jobs are utilizing unique connections and industries, including cold applications, networking, and exploring non-traditional job avenues. Recent alumni can be a great resource for introductions, and considering unconventional job sectors can pay off. Personalized approaches, such as showcasing adaptability and building rapport, are crucial for success. Internships play a pivotal role in securing full-time positions, emphasizing skills improvement and commitment to employers. Remember, perseverance and strategic networking yield success in the current job landscape. Good luck!

After graduating college, I landed a $12/hr job. I was considered one of the "lucky" ones. History books might tell you the recession lasted from 2007 to 2009, but when I graduated in December 2010, jobs were still scarce. Internships? Non-existent. So, I pivoted, took summer classes, and graduated early—only to step into one of the toughest job markets in recent history. I went to a staffing agency to find a job. My degree was completely irrelevant to them. Although I had worked throughout college, in an employer's eyes, I had zero professional experience. But that manager saw my ambition and asked me to work there. Most of my peers took 9 to 15 months to land a job. All had degrees, yet were still working minimum-wage jobs. During this time, I was crushed under a wave of anxiety, stress, and sadness. I started to wonder if college was a waste as bills began piling up and I couldn’t afford to pay them. The corporate ladder? It was harder to climb because others who graduated before and after us were already starting higher. But that’s life—it’s not fair. And you know what? That’s okay. Because we got there. So, whether you're just starting your career or you’ve recently been laid off, remember this: You will get there too. And when you do, you’ll have more grit, resilience, and a story worth telling. We’re all building our resilience. Our time is coming. These are delays, not derailments. I’d love to hear your story of resilience! Please share in the comments below.
