For the first 60 years it was preventing Forest Fires, the motto change to Wildfires is recent history. The early promotion of prevention lead to the all fire is bad fire mentality, and the poor management decisions which have led to massive fuel loads and catastrophic fires especially on western public lands. As a former state forester, I’ve worn the suit for fairs, FFA events etc. to promote fire prevention. Im glad the USFS has come to realize the place for fire in fire dependent ecosystems.

Growing up in Colorado, the message from Smokey Bear - "Only you can prevent wildfires"- has always stuck with me. It's incredible to think that Smokey has been a symbol of fire prevention for 80 years. What a legend!

2moWell this is just amazing as I am a Publicis employee!!!! Thank you for posting this. My grandfather, Alton Miller created the original illustration of Smokey The Bear back in 1944. He worked for the US Government as a botanist and environmentalist. He had a display in the Smithsonian and I remember going to see it as a child.
