Here's an extract from the speech Part 2: "The journey of WIMA began five years ago, serving as a testament to resilience and determination amidst uncertainty. In 2019, amidst global chaos, WIMA embarked on a mission to spotlight female leaders who defied the odds and achieved prominence in their respective fields. Recognizing the invaluable contributions of women leaders, WIMA has cultivated a pipeline of 225 female leaders in Tanzania and other African countries. From East Africa, West Africa, South & North Africa. We launched the first gender diversity report showing female representation at DSE from 2022 to date. We have provided capacity building for more than 83 WIMA's impact knows no bounds. Its legacy of empowerment and recognition has transcended borders, inspiring women to aim for the highest achievements and break through glass ceilings. Among its success stories are luminaries such as Mwanahiba Mzee, Jokate Mwegelo, Irene Madeje, and Madam Ruth Zaipuna and many others, who have attained prestigious positions of influence, including presidential appointments and executive roles." Our international success stories, such as Ms. Folasade and Honorable Karishma Pelham, highlight the impact of our efforts beyond borders. Yet, our work extends far beyond individual achievements. We've spearheaded groundbreaking initiatives like the first gender diversity research report analyzing female representation in the DSE (Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange), offering invaluable insights for improvement. Moreover, our commitment is evident in the capacity-building sessions we've conducted for over 83 women leaders, focusing on board readiness, effectiveness, and leadership training. Additionally, we've provided mentorship to over 80 emerging female leaders and facilitated networking sessions through our breakfast meetings, fostering connections and enabling access to markets. Here are the key highlights from her inspiring speech: Challenges and Overcoming Patriarchy: - Women leaders continuously confront and overcome entrenched norms of patriarchy and stereotypes. - Through systemic interventions and unwavering determination, they have risen as pivotal agents of change, challenging the status quo and advancing gender equality. Representation and Empowerment: - Representation of women has been elevated to 50% in 21 states within India. - Out of over 3.1 million elected representatives, more than 1.4 million are women, reflecting significant strides in women’s leadership. Alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): - India’s local planning process is meticulously aligned with the localization of the SDGs across nine themes, focusing on empowering women. - The women-friendly village theme explicitly concentrates on gender, integrating women’s welfare into annual Panchayat development plans. This semester, I learned COMM5501 and gained a lot. Next, I will show my learning results. 📃 I choose topic related to SDG5.5 to explore the necessity, urgency and feasible methods of bridging the gender gap in leadership positions in India. And I suggest, to meet SDG 5.5, India could require companies to meet gender diversity targets and provide tax incentives. In addition, flexible working hours and parental leave could be provided for women. Finally, increase women's access to higher education through financial assistance and provide vocational and leadership training. 📌 The first time I attended the course, I was attracted by Poon Leung's interesting and rich content in the lecture. But when asked to choose topics from among the 17 SDG goals, I found that I had paid little attention to these issues of human destiny. But as I made my decision, the topic of gender equality naturally came to my mind. I did a lot of searching, but the topic of gender equality is very broad. Fortunately, in the early stage of the course, I received a lot of help from my tutor Owen Tong and classmates, who helped me find the focus of my research. And through their feedback, I screened out compelling data. The course also taught me a lot of data visualization skills and enabled me to look at my work from the perspective of others and improve it. I benefited a lot. 🖋 Overall, I rate my work 8/10. Although I tried to find a lot of materials and data, and tried to present them within 3 minutes, I still felt that there were still many things that were not explained in detail and could not fully convince the audience. In addition, I also feel that my data story is more of a debriefing than a story. This still needs to be improved. Finally, I would like to say that gender equality is a grand life project. Despite the growing presence of women in senior business roles, there remains a concerning trend of women being excluded from investment opportunities due to a lack of knowledge or confidence. In fact, female investors in the UK are still outnumbered three-to-one by their male counterparts.
