Meet Donna Davis. She's the lead Project Manager on the Cogswell District Redevelopment project, one of the biggest city-building initiatives in the history of Halifax. Donna began her 35-year career with the municipality in 1988 as a Junior Planner for the Town of Bedford (prior to amalgamation). Since then, she has held numerous management and professional positions in planning and development, information management, and information technology. We recently asked Donna some questions about the Cogswell District Redevelopment Project. Here are her answers: 1. What are you most excited about when it comes to the project? We’re taking an underutilized, aging piece of infrastructure and creating a new neighborhood on prime real estate at the edge of downtown. It's going to be an exciting new place for people to live, visit, work, and play. More than 40% of the district is devoted to parks, open spaces, and pedestrian friendly public realm. The new streets, sidewalks, cycling greenways, and multi-use paths will reconnect the north end neighhourhood to downtown and the waterfront, as it was 50 years ago before the interchange was built. I will treasure the opportunity to be part of this very special project. I see it as a personal legacy. 2. What has surprised you the most with this project? Our ability to maintain reasonable and safe traffic and pedestrian movements through the project, as well as keep existing underground services running while we construct new roads and install new service infrastructure. It's been a complicated “dance” to sequence all of this but we've been able to do this quite well. It was anticipated the project would be extremely disruptive to traffic movement during construction. While there have been impacts, the overall response has been, “It hasn’t been as bad as anticipated.” This has been a pleasant surprise! 3. What is the main thing you’d like residents to know about the project? The project is 50% complete and is on track to be substantially completed by December 2025. Thus far, the project is on budget. Didn't want to miss showcasing this approval as it is another huge win for Woodbridge and the whole region. On January 17th the Woodbridge Planning Board approved 235 Residential Units, a new medical office/office building and new restaurant space at the Metropark Station. Stonefield Engineering & Design provided Traffic Engineering and Professional Planning expertise for Russo Development on this transformational project. In addition to the new mixed-use development right on this NJ Transit/Amtrak hub, there will be traffic improvements including new and updated traffic signals, changes that will provide for a more efficient bus circulation and parking layout, and station improvements to one of the most undervalued transit hubs. This project represents one of those ideal private-public partnerships between a developer, Township, and State Agency. Jeanette White of the N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) updated the Sylva Rotary Club on the R-5600 project to reconfigure N.C. 107 through Sylva's commercial corridor. The $155 million, 2.6-mile project aims to improve safety and traffic flow by implementing a right-in, right-out configuration and adding several walls to minimize business impact. Construction, starting in late 2025 and lasting about four years, could be shortened by working during low-traffic daylight hours. The project will modernize stormwater management and incorporate a green wave traffic system. Despite community concerns, efforts have been made to reduce business disruptions, with 40 businesses impacted. Denver’s construction and development sector faces unique regulatory challenges that hamper growth, according to a recent Bisnow article. Complex zoning laws, permitting processes, and environmental standards are causing delays and higher costs in an already challenging economic environment.
