Chemical Engineering Magazine spoke to BATT co-founder and executive director Sam Gillard for a cover story on the new projects and R&D efforts in the United States to extract, process, and recycle lithium for electric vehicle batteries. “Considering where we were four years ago in the U.S., I feel really optimistic about where we’ll be in two years," Gillard told Mary Page Bailey, the magazine's senior associate editor. "I am also optimistic that our percentage of global demand is going to increase, which to me is a key metric." "We do have an excellent innovation landscape here, from national labs to private industry," he added. But there are still many challenges to overcome to realize commercial-scale production, including the relatively low cost of lithium on the international market, Gillard warned. “If lithium prices are where they are today," he explained, "it’s going to be a challenge to scale up and to get capital in this climate, and also have viable businesses in the U.S. The big question on the processing side is who’s going to capitalize at the right time." BATT members, whose activities range from materials extraction to component manufacturing and recycling, are joining forces to incentivize the domestic production of EV batteries. The coalition's leadership brings a unique mix of technical and policy expertise, positioning BATT as an influential voice in advising Congress and federal agencies on the tax, trade and other policies that will be most effective in creating a clean energy economy that is built to last. Gillard told the magazine that one key objective of the coalition is developing and executing a long-term strategy for how the industry will establish the infrastructure needed to recover and reuse lithium and other critical materials from spent batteries. "We don’t know how much of a challenge this is ultimately going to be yet, because we don’t have good data, but there are a couple of things that give me hope,” Gillard said. “The automotive manufacturers don’t want their batteries to end up at disparate dismantling facilities, so they have a need to close that supply-chain loop for themselves, because there will be a need for that material." He added: "They also are offering more modular battery designs that are much easier to take apart, both for repair and recycling." Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eQds-V98

Altilium files UK Patent for recovery of Graphite from recycling old EV batteries, giving anode circularity and reducing the UK’s reliance on imported raw materials. 🧑🔬 The new patent application is for an advanced process that recovers high-quality graphite from spent EV battery black mass (anode and cathode waste). This reclaimed graphite, processed through our EcoAnode™ technology, is redesigned for optimal reuse in the production of new, low carbon battery anodes. ♻️ Our innovative approach not only enhances the value of battery recycling by creating additional revenue streams, but also plays a crucial role in closing the loop in EV battery production, contributing significantly to environmental sustainability and UK energy security. 🇨🇳 China currently refines over 90% of the world’s graphite and recently announced controls on exports, forcing OEMs and battery manufacturers to explore alternative supply chains. With a growing shortfall in graphite supply expected over the next decade, a shift towards self-sufficiency will be critical for the UK to meet the growing needs of EV battery anodes. 🤝 Earlier this year we announced a partnership with battery materials and technology company Talga Group Ltd. Under the agreement, the two companies will focus on optimising the recovery of graphite from old EV batteries to produce a battery-grade product for use in new anodes. #criticalminerals #graphite #circularity #evs #anode #innovation

Exciting developments in the battery recycling space as ReElement Technologies, American Metals LLC, and Indian battery recycler LOHUM Cleantech join forces to create an integrated lithium-ion #battery processing facility in Indiana, USA. The new facility, located at the Marion Advanced Technology Centre, will have a capacity of 15.5 GWh annually, with an initial investment of over $30 million. What's truly remarkable about this project is its end-to-end approach—covering the entire value chain from battery cell testing and separation to the recycling, recovery of critical raw materials, and production of new battery materials. This partnership is a major step forward in the circular economy, where the focus is not just on #recycling but on creating a fully #sustainable supply chain for lithium-ion #batteries. Given the increasing demand for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage, initiatives like this are critical to ensuring a steady supply of essential materials like #lithium, cobalt, and nickel while reducing environmental impact. This collaboration will be instrumental in addressing both environmental and economic challenges, keeping the U.S. competitive in the global race for clean energy solutions. It's an exciting time for the battery recycling industry, and this facility is set to be a significant milestone. 👉 Jesse Morris 🔔 Follow Jesse Morris for interesting posts on: #BatteryTech, #Sustainability and #GreenTechnology Source: https://lnkd.in/eDh5dqYD
