I want to share my thoughts on a topic – the selection criteria for rugby teams. One of my athletes struggled to break into the first team because he could not get a certain score for the Bronco test. While the Bronco test has become a widely used measure for assessing players' fitness, I believe it's time for us to reconsider its dominance in the selection process. The Bronco test provides valuable insights into players' aerobic endurance and fitness levels. However, rugby is so much more than just sprinting, recovery, or turn and go. Rugby is a game that demands a wide range of skills – from precise passing to strategic decision-making. A player's ability to contribute to these aspects of the game should be given due consideration alongside their Bronco score. Let's not forget that every player brings a unique set of strengths to the team, and a rigid focus on the Bronco score might lead to missed opportunities to harness these individual talents. I want to emphasize that I am not suggesting we totally ignore the Bronco score. However, I advocate for a more balanced approach where it is not the sole determinant but one of many factors considered in the selection process. Without first having football fans, you can't have Manchester City fans. Without cricket fans you can't have Proteas fans. Increasing the fandom of a sport grows the fandom of the popular teams within the sport. Like Bennie De Bruyn of AB InBev once said, “When the growth of a product category, benefits the players of that category”. Imagine if the powers that be only focussed on promoting Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes, Red Bull and Verstappen, Ferrari and McClaren because they were the only marketing assists available? Where would the F1 be now? 5 years ago, half the F1 grid was not profitable, and study by Forbes last year estimated that the average team value had increased 276 per cent since 2019 to US$1.88 billion. Gotta be honest, I wouldn't have expected Formula 1 champ Nico Rosberg to be a LinkedIn member, but there he was on my "recommended to follow" list. Hei Nico! 👋 I'm transported back to 2021 when I fulfilled a mission I'd had for several years, by that point: To figure out why Finns are so ridiculously over-represented in F1 success. TL;DR, I did not uncover any huge secret, but I did learn a lot. I wrote about it all in an article I'll link to in the comments. Nico Rosberg is in there, although slightly less than his father, Keke. Here's an excerpt: "Finns in F1 can easily be classified in one of two categories: pre-Keke or post-Keke. For the uninitiated, “Keke” refers to Keke Rosberg, Finland’s first F1 World Champion. Despite being the third Finn to compete on the track, Rosberg’s nine-season tenure in the sport marked the true beginning of Finland’s F1 legacy. His 17 podiums, 5 pole positions, 38 points finishes, and five wins were all the first in their respective categories for Finland, and threw open the proverbial floodgates." == I'd like to think I'm a better researcher and writer today, but I look back very fondly on writing this piece. ** Misleading SCMP headline alert, next year’s #HKSevens will still be held in Hong Kong, it is only moving to the newly constructed Kai Tak Sports Park on the Kowloon side. * This is great news for those living or working on the island-side who have been negatively impacted by the weeklong traffic paralysis each year. By next year, I hope to see additional buses and ferries being deployed to serve the ticket-holders, with pre-announced schedules. Also designated passenger drop off points for cars and taxis should be mandated in *all* the busy districts around town to reduce traffic bottlenecks. It does not matter if the event is being held at the Coliseum in Causeway Bay or the Kai Tak Sports Park, more thoughts *must* be given to improve the #logistics of getting the ticket-holders to and from the event — and to busy districts around town, so that life can carry on as usual in the rest of Hong Kong. That is what being a #SmartCity — and a great city, is all about. #bahhumbug
