Did you know… Well, actually we all know it, but so many of us still do it. I’m talking about being on our phones while we’re driving. Quite simply, texting while driving increases the likelihood of an accident by 23 times. Here’s the part you probably don’t know. Parents pay attention: Children are known to be 12 times more distracting to drivers than talking on their phones. Research shows that, on average, parents are distracted by their children for over 20% of the time during a 16-minute car trip. If you’re driving at 90km/h and you take your eyes off the road to talk to your child, or to read a text message, for just five seconds, that’s the equivalent of driving the length of a rugby field with your eyes closed. As a parent myself, I know that it’s a natural urge to care for your children. I know that it’s difficult to ignore my children’s needs. But knowing that 10% of new moms have had an accident while driving with their babies, I’m becoming more conscious of the dangers of distracted driving and teaching my kids – thank goodness they’re old enough to understand – how to be better passengers. A very tragic week for our young road users. No parents/ one should suffer from such unnecessary lost of a love one. In the space of a week, we have seen 2 young lives lost due to road accidents. Are they preventable? Definitely. Schools are educating, parents are reminding and yet no one did anything to improve our drivers’ competencies. As a driver for 2 decades, I can safely say that our roads have become more dangerous and less forgiving in the last 10 years. I urge the relevant authorities to do more in reviewing and/or retest our drivers’ competencies. To also review or reduce the passing rate of driving tests. Apps developers for transportation of logistic/ people/ food to also remove time based rewards or otherwise to include road safety aspects to their apps that rewards safe and punctual drivers. All of us have a role to play before our kid can come home safely. It pains me just knowing another young life is lost.. RIP to another little angel..

From grad parties to family trips, reasons to be on the road this summer are plentiful. But as your family — and your teenagers — get behind the wheel, realize that the summertime is the most dangerous time of the year for young drivers. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the number of fatal teen driver collisions increases by 15% between Memorial Day and Labor Day. This means more than 1,600 people have been killed in summertime accidents over the last five years involving inexperienced teen drivers. And while it’s impossible to blame one specific trend or issue, GuardChild conducted a survey that may clue us in: 69% of 16- to 18-year old teens have admitted to speeding, running lights, or texting while driving during the last month. Now is the time to properly train — and monitor — your young drivers. Parents: Change starts with you. Ensure your whole family experiences safe travels this summer by helping your teen establish safe driving habits: Keep an eye out for eDriving’s soon-to-be-released app Mentor, coming out for consumers. Install the app on your teen’s phone to monitor their driving behavior Enroll your child in drivers ed at the time that’s best for them. DoSomething.org reports that 56% of teenagers rely on their parents to learn how to drive Talk to your teenager about the friends they ride with. While states’ GDL laws impose restrictions on teen passengers, ensure your child feels empowered to be vocal about dangerous driving behavior with their friends Enforce curfews. More than 40% of teen auto deaths occur between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
