The VERLIFE Guidelines are out! The guidelines addresses harmonised procedures for the integrity and lifetime assessment of pressure boundary components and pipe systems of VVER-type reactors. The VERLIFE Guidelines are the result of a collaborative effort of nearly 15 years involving 68 experts in the field. The guidelines are a complete set of nuclear codes & standards on reactor operation. The guidelines are regularly reviewed and revised based on latest OPEX and R&D. Nuclear power is a practical source of energy capable of meeting the world’s requirements. However, it requires long-term storage solutions for hazardous materials created in production. Despite being made of corrosion-resistant Alloy-22, stress corrosion cracking has plagued nuclear waste containers, impacting design life, safety, and cost. When waste containers are welded shut, shrinkage during cooling causes high tensile stresses, leaving the welds in tension and vulnerable to stress corrosion cracking. Though they are designed to last for over 10,000 years, the combination of tension and stress corrosion cracking pose a significant threat of containment failure. Lambda developed a solution to completely eliminate stress corrosion cracking in the closure welds, ensuring waste containers could last for the entire designed component life. Each single pellet you are looking at, 20mm tall and 12mm wide, has the internal energy equivalence of one metric ton of coal. A tray like this, the same size as a cooking tray you would put in your household oven, holding U-235 pellets can contain over 100 MILLION BTU worth of energy! The scientific field has made breakthroughs with nuclear enrichment processes. It's time for the future generation of engineers (like myself) to take this energy and put it it to use, changing the lives of millions of Australians for the better, and putting Australian energy into a new era of reliability, efficiency, safety and safety.
NEWS: Westinghouse Electric Company produced its first batch of new fuel pellets that contain higher enrichment levels than what’s currently used in commercial reactors. These ADOPT™ fuel pellets were developed through our Accident Tolerant Fuel Program to help boost the performance and safety of nuclear plants. The new pellets can be enriched up to 8 percent weight U-235 and include additives that are expected to improve the safety performance of the fuel while operating at increased power levels. The higher enrichment also allows the fuel to operate for longer stretches in the reactor to help reduce the number of outages needed for refueling. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eprNjwFt
