As Deaconess Foundation has adopted a new strategic framework, we are intentionally reflecting on how each of our practices and policies are interwoven into our strategic aspiration of reaching liberation in seven generations. In this pursuit we knew it was necessary to interrogate our own hearts as reflected in our internal practices and processes to make sure that we are not perpetuating much of the harm that we seek to ameliorate. This reflection has led to immediate changes to our internal practices and ongoing conversations about racial equity within our organization. We acknowledge that this is a process, and though we are not perfect, we are committed to correcting course as we evolve. The systemic social and professional implications of being single and childless are very real and challenging to manage. Assumptions that individuals have chosen this path are often inaccurate, with reasons varying for each person. As one grows older, being childless can impact relationships, while being single can pose challenges in social circles dominated by married individuals. Unfortunately, these assumptions are generally negative. Addressing intrusive questions like "why aren't you married?" or "why don't you have kids?" can be exhausting and insensitive. Many fail to understand the hostility faced by single and childless individuals, which seems to be increasing rather than diminishing. It's disheartening that such biases exist, even perpetuated by those in leadership positions. The recent comments targeting women, particularly "women with cats," by a political candidate are not only baffling but also unacceptable, especially given the protections outlined in laws like Title VII of our Civil Rights. Discriminatory attitudes have no place in leadership roles and should be condemned unequivocally. While discussing such topics may be considered taboo, it's essential to speak out against discrimination, regardless of professional expectations. Leaders must challenge their own assumptions and reject any form of discrimination. Those who exacerbate rather than alleviate societal issues have no place in positions of influence. #leadership #discrimination #equality #professionalism
