Yorkshire Water's Sewage Sludge Gasification project has caught the spotlight - not only as a winner but as a potential game-changer for environmental management. This ingenious approach turns a challenge on its head, converting sewage sludge into hydrogen and other low-carbon products, it's a stellar example of a circular economy in action. New research team receives over £6m to help agriculture to net zero. A new consortium has received over £6 million from the government to help tackle greenhouse gas emissions from land use and agriculture. The Land Use for Net Zero (LUNZ) Hub will provide the government with evidence around land use, from renewable energy to soil carbon and green finance, to help net zero by 2050. The consortium, which has received £6.25m is funding, is co-led led by the James Hutton Institute, Aberystwyth University and the University of Leicester. The project also aims to play a role in helping to communicate more widely the importance of land and how it is used as a major carbon sink or source.   #netzero #carbon #renewable #pollution #sustainability

Recent plans for a gas-fired power plant and concrete crushing activity at the former Seiont Brickworks near Caernarfon have sparked significant concern among local residents and environmental campaigners - and with us, as a local business. As highlighted by Arfon MS Sian Gwenllian, these proposals seem to contradict Wales' carbon emission targets and the spirit of the Well-being of Future Generations Act. The potential impacts on air quality, noise levels, traffic, and local wildlife are particularly alarming given the site's proximity to homes, a hospital, and ancient woodland. The company states that this development will complement renewable energy providing a reliable backup - the reality is, however, that there are already better storage solutions which lack the negative effects this plan would have. Batteries, hydrogen, and pump storage all seem likely to be more reasonable, sustainable, forward-thinking solutions. We urge everyone to participate in the ongoing consultation and voice their concerns before it ends on June 14, 2024.
