In a world as diverse as ours, it’s about time that brands reflect the beautiful spectrum of humanity! 🌍 ✨ 2024 marks a year where inclusivity isn’t just a trend; it’s a mission. Brands are stepping up, celebrating every color, shape, and story. Gone are the days of one-size-fits-all illustrations and generic representations. We're embracing the real, the relatable, and the uniquely beautiful in every person.  From adding more ethnicities and body types to challenging gender norms, our illustrations are becoming a mirror to the world we live in. It’s about seeing yourself in the brands you love and knowing you belong. Let’s celebrate the diversity that makes us who we are, with designs that are as inclusive as they are inspiring. Because when we see each other, really see each other, the world becomes a more connected place.

It’s not new news that the outdoor industry has a diversity problem. Walk any industry tradeshow, hit almost any ski hill or major trail and the situation is obvious. The issue is not a lack of recognition nor a lack of desire to make a change: many outdoor industry brands and retailers have made efforts over the last number of years, but the results have been limited at best. Recognizing that a new approach was needed, Teresa Baker of the Outdoor CEO Diversity Pledge called together a group of leading outdoor CEOs in Ventura, California earlier this year. We talked about our approaches, our successes, and our challenges. The key takeaway for many of us was that we cannot continue to go it alone – real progress will only be achieved by coming together as an industry. Since that meeting, Moosejaw joined a group of industry leaders led by the inspiring Teresa Baker and the awesome Josie Norris to develop the Outdoor Diversity Alliance (ODA) to assist the outdoor industry in addressing systemic issues impacting diversity, equity, and inclusion through collective action. ODA plans to serve as a central group driving and supporting industry-wide collaboration between businesses and historically underrepresented communities in the outdoors. The ODA launched this week and invites all outdoor brands, retailers, organizations and community groups to join together and make meaningful change. ODA will use a business membership model to fund operations. Our goal is to secure $150,000 in new member commitments by the end of this year. 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐬? 🌟 Join the Conversation: Diversity, Inclusion, and Brand Engagement 🌟 As an outdoors enthusiast, I've always associated nature with freedom and inclusivity. So, I'm genuinely curious about the latest initiative from The North Face... In the midst of their soaring popularity, especially among the younger generation (which I see with my own 14 and 16 year old kids), The North Face has launched "Allyship In The Outdoors," a campaign targeting Gen Z’s with a 20% discount. However, there's a twist - participants must complete an online Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) course consisting of 4 modules and multiple choice questions. Here are a few things currently buzzing in my mind: 1️⃣ Why limit the campaign to exclude the US? Are racism and D&I not pressing issues globally? 2️⃣ What authority does a brand have to mandate D&I training for its consumers? Does The North Face have the history and trust with the consumer o enforce this requirement? 3️⃣ Does this initiative inadvertently exclude consumers from diverse backgrounds? Is it implying that only certain demographics are welcome? I'm puzzled by what seems like a checkbox approach. While the campaign has sparked discussions across consumer focused social media platforms (X / Twitter etc) The North Face's official response remains elusive. In a world where Diversity & Inclusion takes centre stage, many brands are stepping up to the plate. But is an online course predominantly aimed at white peolle the most effective way to promote these values? Let's discuss! Today, we’re spotlighting Black- and LGBTQ+-owned fashion brand Brandon Blackwood New York and its founder, BRANDON BLACKWOOD ✨ Brandon Blackwood, neuroscience major turned fashion entrepreneur, started designing handbags in 2015. Brandon Blackwood New York went viral in 2020 with its End Systemic Racism (ESR) Tote in response to calls for social and civil rights justice, and the brand took off, growing from 30,000 to 300,000 Instagram followers essentially overnight. All proceeds from ESR Tote sales benefit the Brandon Blackwood Foundation, dedicated to empowering Black and POC creatives through education, philanthropy, and activism. “I felt completely uninspired during the Black Lives Matter movement, and it felt a little phony making pretty bags to sell, so [the ESR tote] was my answer to it. I wanted to find a way to do something creative while also giving back and fighting against oppression,” said Blackwell in a L'Office interview. The brand's influence and product range have continued to grow, with collaborations like Google, Saks Fifth Avenue x Michelle Obama, Saweetie x McDonald's, and retail partnerships with Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus Group and more, as well as a new affordable line, Studio by Brandon Blackwood.
