[PROJECT UPDATE] Yesterday EuCIA met with #MAXblade project partner The University of Edinburgh to exchange views on the #circularity of composite materials. The development of a circular economy roadmap for composite tidal turbine blades is a key task for this European project, where we are contributing our knowledge on life cycle assessment of composites and our vision on the circularity of composite materials. The meeting discussed the cradle-to-gate #LCA approach, and it was an opportunity to present solutions for end-of-use composites, such as the existing route of #recycling into cement. The team also explored options for the design of more sustainable and efficient blades in the future. EuCIA is proud to bring its composites expertise to this exciting collaboration which aims to upscale this emerging renewable energy whilst also lowering the cost of tidal energy by more developing more efficient turbines. The tidal sector has the potential to make significant contributions to Europe’s #energy systems. European ocean energy could potentially generate 100GW of capacity by 2050. #compositematerials #tidalenergy #renewableenergy #oceanenergy #circulareconomy #europe #research #innovation

🌟 What are we collaborating on with the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems (IWES)? Our project, called SmartRoMaIn, aims to enhance efficiency in wind rotor blade manufacturing. The project aims to significantly reduce manufacturing defects, increase production rates, and reduce the risk of structural damage in the field. As a result, costly repair work can be avoided. Last week, we visited the IWES in Bremerhaven and dove deep into testing the limits of our LeadingCheck technology. 🚀 Fueling Innovation Together At 8tree, we believe that innovation thrives in collaboration. Our partnership with Fraunhofer-Institut für Windenergiesysteme (IWES) exemplifies this belief, and we're incredibly proud to be part of a community that's driving positive change and shaping the future of technology. #ThrowbackThursday #IWESBremerhaven #SmartRoMaIn #LeadingCheck #wavecheck #WindIndustry #Collaboration #Innovation

#Good News #New Horizon Europe project on Wind as a coordinator. We're excited to announce that our Horizon Europe Project "CIRCWIND: Development of CIRCular optimised material solutions for WIND turbine blades and support structures" has been granted funding after being on the waiting list for a few months CIRCWIND aims to develop and validate cutting-edge technologies for present and future wind turbines (WT). The project’s primary goal is to enhance the reliability, lifespan, performance, operability, and maintainability of WTs. Moreover, the CIRCWIND aims to find cost-efficient pathways towards complete circularity in a context where a growing number of WT are reaching their EoL. The key research areas of CIRCWIND include: - Developing a prototype Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) material for blades with improved damage tolerance and fatigue life. - Creating a circular low Carbon concrete material for offshore floating WTs, using a new geopolymer binder and circular lightweight aggregates (CLWA). - Introducing new virtual replica-based models and simulation tools for the FRP material and geopolymer concrete. - Performing an integrated sustainability analysis that addresses social, economic, and environmental aspects, along with improved circularity. These innovations will enable future WTs to incorporate circular and cost-efficient materials in critical WT components, ensuring feasibility, sustainability, acceptability, and high replicability. Additionally, new simulation tools and virtual replicas will be utilized to improve operation and maintenance costs. CIRCWIND consortium has a good balance of academic and industrial partners. The consortium consists of 8 partners from 6 different countries (Denmark (2), Norway (2), Iceland, Spain, Italy and Belgium). This interdisciplinary consortium has been constituted bringing together different and complementary profiles as research centres (SINTEF AS, Norway), universities (Aalborg University, Denmark), material developers (Rockpore, Norway), GEROSION, Iceland), WT floater manufacturers and energy infrastructure (ACCIONA Construction S.A, Spain ), WT manufacturers and O&M services providers (Siemens Gamesa, Denmark/Spain), sustainability assessment experts (LCE Engineering, Italy) and communication and dissemination experts (Zabala, Belgium). SINTEF AS will be coordinating this exciting project. #Renewable energy #Wind #Circular materials #Blades #Concerte Finn Erik Solvang Esben Lindgaard
