Completing the Corporate Claims Claim Trainee Development Program has been a remarkable experience, and I couldn’t have done it without the support of my fellow Great Americans. During the past eight months, I have learned so many lessons. The first lesson being the art of perseverance. The path wasn’t always smooth, but I learned to embrace challenges. Each trial was a puzzle, and every solution a victory. Next, was humility, impostor syndrome knocked on my door, but I realized it’s a sign of growth. A delayed but essential acknowledgment of the profound journey in 2023:   Graduated from Humber's Insurance Management program with honors, a moment made more special by the presence of classmates, professors and the support of a dedicated manager in Fritzie Tanega at the graduation ceremony. Embarked on the journey of Supply Chain Management at Humber, realizing the symbiotic relationship it shares with the insurance industry – a fusion of knowledge that amplifies my professional acumen. Recognizing the crucial role of supply chain in insurance, where seamless operations are paramount for effective risk management and client satisfaction. Eight of the ten CIP modules conquered, paving the way for a comprehensive understanding of the industry and positioning me as a proficient professional. Hoping to complete the remaining 2 by the end of year. Interned at Travelers Canada, an experience that not only honed my skills but also resulted in a part-time role. Grateful for the Fritzie Tanega, Joanne Ramnarine and Karla Badger-Brown for the trust bestowed upon me and the chance to contribute meaningfully to the organization’s success. Last week vs this week…. I may or may not have fuelled Luiza Todd FPFS CFP to have a bit of a rant (and quite right too) about a couple of scenarios where firms weren’t exactly being supportive. 😬Withdrawing career progression opportunities. 😬Expecting someone to work for free for a whole week as a ‘trial run’. Not great…. However, I want to kick this week off in a positive light, because my Monday has been full of such things and it’s important to highlight the good. Loads of firms and individuals in our industry are doing a lot to support others, so credit where it’s due. Here’s some examples of conversations I’ve had today…. 🤩Firstly, businesses are seeking help, so that they CAN support their teams fully when it come to exam support and career progression. And they’re not putting their people at any kind of disadvantage to do so. I’ve spoken to three firms today that are doing all they can to do this, with Bespoke Training Solutions Ltd helping them achieve this😍 🤩Second - in my role as PFS Liaison Officer for Sussex CII (IIS), I attended a meeting today with Claire Bishop of the Chartered Insurance Institute, where she hosted many Careers Officers of local institutes (UK wide) to collaborate and share best practice when it comes to us engaging with schools/colleges/universities, flying the flag of FS being a career of choice. We talked about what we are doing already and what else we could be doing to showcase our industry. A fab session actually, with loads of ideas put out. Yes there’s lots of work to do here but I definitely feel that it’s an area we can excel in, especially with collaborative sessions like this morning - thank you to everyone that attended today. I’ll share some of the initiatives I had no idea about plus new ones in a further post this week. Because this post is long already 🤣🙈 So you see….plenty going on that is sooooo good! Leading an ERG changed my life and it can change yours too - Here's how.. Stepping up to lead an Employee Resource Group (ERG) was transformative for me. Both in companies and now running iCAN: The Insurance Cultural Awareness Network If you're considering taking a similar leap, here’s how it might change your life.. 1 - Discovering my voice - Before leading an ERG, I was often sitting on opinions I wanted to say, and rooms I wanted to speak in. Now, I confidently advocate for change, ensuring voices, including my own, are heard. 2 - Building lifelong connections - This one is a biggie! The relationships forged within ERGs are profound. I've met mentors, allies, and friends, who have been instrumental in my personal and professional journey. Especially the squad in the pictue below! 3 - Enhanced self-awareness - Engaging with diverse groups has made me introspective. I understood my biases, values, and became a more empathetic individual. Kishan Mangat and I have really gone on a journey here! 4 - Learning to adapt - ERGs come with their set of challenges. Leading them taught me to be adaptable, innovative, and always on my toes. 5 - A sense of purpose - Working towards a greater good - Inclusion, diversity, and equal opportunities – gave a renewed sense of purpose to my daily tasks. 6 - Visibility and opportunities - Being at the forefront of an ERG increased my visibility within my organisation, leading to exciting opportunities, and leading a cross-industry network, well that has led to me being in the position I am in today! My teams have fully understood this one! 7 - Resilience through challenges - Every hurdle faced and overcome as an ERG leader added to my resilience and tenacity. To anyone contemplating leading an ERG, It’s more than just a role; it's a life-changing experience. And while the journey has its challenges, the growth, connections, and impact you’ll make are incomparable. The answer is yes, and go for it hard!
