Energy Secretary Granholm champions partnership with clean nuclear power industry at launch of next generation reactors in Georgia In touting the climate benefits of the project, the secretary observed that 10 million metric tons of carbon emissions will be avoided annually; equivalent to planting 165 million trees each year. U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm gave a full-throttled endorsement for the future of a clean U.S. Nuclear Industry in recent remarks delivered at the startup of the Vogtle Unit 4 in Waynesboro, Georgia. In pointing to the landmark significance of the project, the secretary noted that the launch of Unit 4 makes Vogtle the largest source of carbon-free power on U.S. electric grid, and will safely power the region’s economy for generations. Moreover, Vogtle 3 and 4 represent the first nuclear reactors built from scratch in the U.S. in more than a generation and were based on innovative reactor designs used for the first-time. In an editorial published Wednesday, The Washington Post highlighted our advanced AP1000® reactor as a big reason for the current buzz around nuclear power to meet the growing demand for clean energy: "The design of the two AP1000 light-water reactors deployed at the Vogtle plant in Georgia over the past two years, each boasting an output of 1.1 gigawatts, is a 21st-century version of the familiar nuclear plants people have been building for decades. The technology is better-designed and even safer, offering a promise of large amounts of power." The editorial echoes the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s recently updated "Advanced Nuclear Commercial Liftoff" report that showed the decreased costs that will come from deploying more AP1000 reactors. Westinghouse is excited to be a big part of this moment when #NuclearEnergy "might be reemerging as an essential tool in the battle against climate change," as the Washington Post wrote. The sudden current "buzz" around Nuclear Power seems to be expanding. From Amazon; Google; Microsoft (Global Giant Organizations); U.S. DOE* to Now Leading Newspaper Washington Post.!! My 2-cents: Good to see NEW Nuclear getting Recognition as a MUST to be Part of the Overall Generation MIX to meet CLEAN Energy Demand and Achieve Global Goal of "Net-zero" by 2050.!   * The recent DOE " full Liftoff" Report cited seems Comprehensive and provide important/useful Data. With regards to the AP1000 Successfully Operating at the Vogtle Site, should provide many "Real" Benefits towards the next Fleet of AP1000 in the U.S. This should Result in Relatively LOWER** Cost. ** The Expected % REDUCTION is in the Right Direction but, seems somewhat Optimistic.!! (Opinion.!) Look forward to the Actual Big Savings in Capital Cost required to Achieve "Cost-Competitiveness for NEW Nuclear (Particularly in the West)   #DATABASE(1970-2024)

There is the potential to install 60 to 95 GW of new nuclear generating capacity at existing and recently retired US nuclear power plant sites, according to new preliminary analysis from the Department of Energy. https://lnkd.in/ep_ziUcr

What is the opportunity cost of a nuclear power station, if say, instead of building 7 nuclear reactors, the government built 6 nuclear reactors and installed solar panels and batteries on every strata building in NSW? For the price of a typical nuclear reactor, you could install 1.11 Gigawatts of solar on 83,933 strata rooftops without solar ($1.55bn) and have enough chump change to install 8.44 Gigawatt Hours of battery storage ($7.1bn). Assuming that the batteries were half full at the time of a power outage, that could sustain power into 1m apartments in NSW for a period of 10 hours. For the price of a more expensive Small Module Reactor, you could go bigger on the batteries and provide backup for a longer period. https://lnkd.in/gTdveGNi #electrifystrata #solar #batteries #vpp

"Another backroom bonanza for nuclear interests"-calling all Ontarians! "The extremely dubious idea of rebuilding 40-year-old reactors at North America's third oldest nuclear station, *surrounded by more people than any other nuclear plant on the continent, is bad enough. Keeping the costs of this ill-considered plan secret is completely unacceptable.  If this plan makes sense, then lets see the real costs and a full comparison to alternatives – or better yet, a competitive procurement process. That's just common sense. Otherwise, what we have is another backroom deal spun up to serve powerful interests. We have lots of viable, cost effective alternatives to taking a decade or more to rebuild a badly outdated nuclear plant. Only thanks to a lack of proper energy planning is this deal even being considered.  *While Quebec and BC have developed real plans to expand their renewable energy powered systems, Ontario makes deals on the fly and stumbles along with 1960's nuclear technology and more polluting gas plants.--------------------" WE NEED WIND AND SOLAR, NOT MORE HIGH-COST NUCLEAR, RELYING MORE AND MORE ON POLLUTING GAS POWER AND UNSAFE CLIMATE!
